Rohit Sharma's mother skips doctor's appointment to witness India's celebrations in Mumbai

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma's mother, Poornima, skipped her doctor's appointment to see her son celebrate the T20 World Cup 2024 win at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. Rohit Sharma's mother witnessed her son celebrating the World Cup victory in front of a supportive crowd of over 30,000 fans.

Rohit Sharma suffered a heartbreaking loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia. However, the Indian skipper joined the elite list of Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni within about seven months. He became the third captain to guide the Indian team to victory in the final match of an ICC World Cup.

The Men in Blue defeated South Africa by 7 runs in the T20 World Cup final in Barbados on June 29. The Indian team ended an 11-year wait for an ICC trophy, with their last win being the Champions Trophy in 2013. Rohit Sharma was seen in tears after winning his first ICC trophy as captain in his illustrious career.

Team India arrived in New Delhi early on July 4 from Barbados. After the on-pitch ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium, Rohit Sharma's mother showered the Indian captain with hugs and kisses in celebration of the Men in Blue's win. This heartwarming moment quickly went viral across social media platforms.

Speaking to Indian Express, Poornima revealed that she skipped a doctor’s appointment to witness her son being honored by the BCCI. She described it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience and an emotional moment for their family. She disclosed that Rohit had decided to retire from T20Is even before the tournament began.

“I have never thought I would see this day. Before going to the World Cup, he had come to meet us and said that he wanted to quit T20Is after this. I just said try to win. I was not feeling well today and had a doctor’s appointment, but I still came as I wanted to see this day,” Rohit Sharma's mother told Indian Express.

“I can’t express my happiness. Look at the cheering. I have never experienced this kind of atmosphere. The amount of love he is getting is because of his hard work and dedication. I’m the happiest mother today. What more can I ask now! This day won’t come again in life. As he was taking the lap of honor, it was an emotional moment as he has been playing for a day like this,” she added.

Rohit Sharma showcased exceptional leadership and pivotal batting performances for India throughout the T20 World Cup 2024. He was India's highest run scorer in the tournament, amassing 257 runs at an average of 36.71 and a strike rate of 156.70. After winning the T20 World Cup, Rohit announced his retirement from the T20 format, having scored 4231 runs in 159 matches.
