Team India opener Rohit Sharma was removed from ODI captaincy ahead of the upcoming series against Australia, with Shubman Gill named as his successor on October 4. Following the announcement, a 13-year-old tweet by Rohit resurfaced and went viral, drawing attention from Indian cricket fans.
Gill had taken over as India’s Test captain ahead of the recent England series. Rohit will remain part of the ODI squad for the upcoming Australia series as a player. Notably, the veteran opener is India’s most successful ODI captain, with a 75% win rate, among those who have led the team in at least 50 matches.
Rohit Sharma's 13-Year-Old Tweet Goes Viral After His Removal as ODI Captain
On September 14, 2012, Rohit Sharma had shared a tweet that read, “End of an era (45) and the start of a new one (77).” At the time, it seemed insignificant, but over a decade later, fans have rediscovered it with fresh meaning.
Rohit Sharma’s iconic jersey number has always been 45, while his successor, Shubman Gill, wears 77. With Gill officially stepping in as India’s new ODI captain in 2025, the post has resurfaced as a coincidence. A message written 13 years ago now fits neatly with the present situation.

As India began preparation for the 2027 World Cup, the selectors decided it was time to bring in new leadership. The team will play a three-match ODI series in Australia, starting on October 19 in Perth, with the second game in Adelaide on October 23 and the final match scheduled for October 25 in Sydney.
Rohit Sharma One Of India's Most Successful ODI captains
Rohit Sharma began his captaincy journey in ODIs as a temporary skipper. He first led the team during the 2017 Sri Lanka tour in Virat Kohli’s absence and later guided India to the 2018 Asia Cup title as a stand-in skipper. He was officially handed the full-time role in December 2021, replacing Kohli.
India enjoyed several notable achievements during his tenure. The team lifted the Asia Cup in 2023 in Sri Lanka and went on to the ODI World Cup final, unbeaten the same year, but lost to Australia. However, Rohit guided India to the 2025 Champions Trophy.
During his ODI tenure from 2017 to 2025, Rohit captained 56 matches, winning 42 and losing 12, alongside one tie and one no-result. With a 75 percent success rate, he is one of India’s most effective white-ball leaders of the modern era.
Shubman Gill Currently Leading Team India in Tests
Earlier this year, Shubman Gill guided India to a 2-2 draw in the five-Test series in England. He led the team to an innings-and-140-run win against the West Indies in the recently concluded opening Test at home.
Gill has also gained leadership experience in the IPL, where he has captained the Gujarat Titans (GT) for the past two seasons. He has managed 14 wins in 27 matches. The experience will help him to take charge of India’s 50-over squad with the goal of building a team for the 2027 World Cup.
The 25-year-old has scored 2,775 runs in 55 ODIs at a remarkable average of 59.04, including a double hundred and seven centuries. He also has a good track record against Australia, with 280 runs from eight innings, including a century and a fifty.
