The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly made a decision on Rohit Sharma's captaincy amid speculation about his future. Following India's victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit is expected to lead the Indian team in the five-match Test series against England in June.

Rohit Sharma's place in the Test squad faced criticism after a series of poor performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The right-handed batter skipped the final Test in Sydney. He managed just 31 runs across three matches in Australia at a dismal average of 6.20, with his highest score being only 10.

Rohit Sharma to Play for India in England Series?

Rohit Sharma has led India in 24 Test matches since taking over from Virat Kohli. The 37-year-old cricketer also made unwanted history last year, becoming the first Indian captain to lose all three home Tests in a series against New Zealand. It ended India's unbeaten home streak that had lasted since 2012.

There were doubts about Rohit’s future in Test cricket. According to The Indian Express, the BCCI and the selection panel have decided to back Rohit as captain for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting June 20. The board feels he is the right choice to lead the team.

“He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” a source told the Indian Express.

I’m Keeping All My Options Open - Rohit Sharma

Following India's Champions Trophy 2025 victory, Rohit Sharma denied rumors of retiring from international cricket. He stated that he is enjoying his game and his time with the team but is keeping his options open for the future.

“Right now, I’m playing really well, and I’m enjoying everything I’m doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice. I can’t really say 2027, because it’s too far, but I’m keeping all my options open,” Rohit said.

Five-Match Test Series Between India and England to Begin on June 20

The five-match Test series between India and England is set to begin at Headingley in Leeds on June 20. Rohit Sharma was the top scorer for India during their 2021 tour of England. He scored 368 runs in eight innings at an average of 52.57. The opening batter smashed two half-centuries and one century.

Overall, Rohit has played seven Tests in England, scoring 524 runs at an average of 40.30, including one century and two half-centuries.

Rohit is set to return to action in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, representing Mumbai Indians (MI). The franchise retained him for ₹16.30 crore before the mega auction. Mumbai Indians will kick off their campaign against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M. Chidambaram Stadium on March 23.
