Team India opener Rohit Sharma had booked his tickets for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, where the Men in Blue managed to draw the five-match series. However, the right-handed batter suddenly announced his retirement before the series began, which shocked fans and the cricket community.

India are set to tour Australia for a three-match ODI series, starting on October 19 in Perth. Rohit was named in the squad but was replaced as captain by Shubman Gill. The batter has played 273 matches and scored 11,168 runs at an average of 48.76 with a strike rate of 92.80, including 32 centuries.

“Rohit Sharma chose to sit out, and in an interview afterward, he said that he is not going anywhere. I asked a few cricketers, and he clearly told me that he is not taking retirement," Juglan stated.

"During the IPL, he spoke to many players and discussed the England series with them. His ticket was booked for the 6th. Sydney was never the last Test for Rohit. Until he officially retired, it was not his last Test. Similarly, Virat Kohli’s last Test was only decided when he officially stepped away.”

Rohit Sharma Last Seen in Action During IPL 2025

Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket ahead of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. He ended his career with 4,301 runs in 67 matches at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries.

The veteran opener had a standout performance during India’s 2021–22 tour of England, finishing as the team’s leading run-scorer with 368 runs from eight innings at an impressive average of 52.57.

The 38-year-old was last active in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, where he played as an opener for the Mumbai Indians (MI). He emerged as the team’s second-highest run-scorer, scoring 418 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 149.28.

The Hardik Pandya-led team finished fourth in the league stage with eight wins from 14 matches, but their campaign ended with a five-wicket loss to eventual runners-up Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Qualifier 2.

Rohit Sharma Set To Play Under Shubman Gill in Australia

India have named a 15-member squad for their upcoming ODI series in Australia. Virat Kohli and Rohit will return to international action for the first time since lifting the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Shubman Gill has taken charge as ODI captain, while Shreyas Iyer has been appointed his deputy. India started their preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with chief selector Ajit Agarkar unveiling the squad after India’s Test victory over the West Indies in Ahmedabad.

Hardik Pandya will miss the series due to an injury sustained during the Asia Cup Super 4 clash against Sri Lanka. The three ODIs will be played in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney on October 19, 23, and 25, followed by a five-match T20I series beginning October 29.
