Ravi Shastri has called for India to receive a larger portion of the International Cricket Council (ICC) revenue. Shastri said that it would be fair for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to demand an even bigger share, adding that India generates the majority of the revenue in world cricket.

The revenue-sharing model introduced by the ICC in 2023 has sparked debate across the cricketing community, with several boards voicing concerns over its imbalance. 12 percent of the total revenue is divided among nine full member nations, excluding the Big Three teams, India, England, and Australia.

India Set to Receive the Largest Share of ICC Revenue for 2024-27 Cycle

India are set to receive the largest portion of the ICC’s revenue for the 2024-27 cycle, securing 38.5% of the total distribution, approximately ₹1,968 crore or $230 million annually. This amount is over five times more than what England (6.89%) and Australia (6.25%) will receive.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the richest cricket board, with a net worth of around $2.25 billion. India’s contribution to global cricket revenue is driven by massive viewership, high media rights value, and unmatched fan engagement.

With a population of 1.4 billion, India brings a financial edge that no other cricketing nation can match. As per reports, India secured favorable terms for their participation in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Most of the Money That’s Generated Comes From India - Ravi Shastri

Ravi Shastri expressed strong support for India receiving the largest share of ICC revenue, given India’s massive contribution to the global cricket economy. He pointed out that India generate the highest revenue through its audience and the commercial success of the IPL.

“Absolutely, I would want more. Because most of the money that’s generated comes from India. So it’s only fair that they get their share of pound of flesh,” claimed Shastri in an interview with Wisden.

“It’s relative, it’s economies. If tomorrow there might be another economy that’s stronger, money might come from there like it did in the 70s-80s, and the chunk of the money went somewhere else,” he added.

It’s Only Fair, and It Shows in the Revenues - Ravi Shastri

Ravi Shastri said that India's involvement significantly boosts viewership and broadcasting income, especially during overseas tours. Shastri said that it is fair for the country to receive its current share or even more.

“So I think it’s only fair, and it shows in the revenues. When India travel, look at the television rights, look at the television income that comes for an India series. So it’s only fair that they get whatever they’re getting now, if not more,” concluded Shastri.

The revenue distribution model faced backlash from several member boards. While most boards refrained from openly challenging the model, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was the only one to publicly oppose it, stating that many other Test-playing countries felt the same.
