CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has finally led the side to a victory in this edition of the IPL after having lost three consecutive games at the start of the tournament. Gaikwad, after the win, had to pay a heavy penalty from his end.
The Chennai Super Kings started IPL 2026 on a poor note, as they lost a hat-trick of games. The first match was a humiliating defeat against the Rajasthan Royals, which was eventually followed by two more losses to the Punjab Kings and then the defending champions, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
After having won their first match and secured two points in the competition, they have advanced to the 9th spot in the IPL points table. After this, the Kolkata Knight Riders are the only team left to win a game yet in this edition of the IPL.
Ruturaj Gaikwad fined for slow over-rate against DC
CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has not had the finest of forms in the ongoing edition of the competition, as he has struggled with the bat. Criticisms have also been levelled against Gaikwad for being clueless on the field, especially when his bowlers have been thrashed by the opposition batters.
This criticism is obvious as Gaikwad has been leading the Chennai Super Kings for the first time in the absence of their former skipper, MS Dhoni. Gaikwad controlled the game far better against the Delhi Capitals and led his team to their first victory.
However, following a slow overrate in the match against the Delhi Capitals, he has been fined a massive INR 12 lakh as a part of the IPL rules. Since it was the team’s first offence under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate violations, he was fined INR 12 lakh.

Ruturaj Gaikwad's awful performance in IPL 2026
Ruturaj Gaikwad, the Chennai Super Kings opener, has been part of the franchise for the past seven seasons. Playing in over 75 IPL matches, the Indian batter has amassed 2500+ runs with a strike rate of 136.50.
Despite his splendid record in the IPL, the CSK skipper has failed to excel this season. The batter has opened in four innings for the Super Kings and could amass 56 runs, averaging just 14, while top-scoring with 28 runs.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has struggled more with a low strike rate. The lack of batting form has been in the limelight, and he has received a massive thrashing in recent times. His poor form will be further highlighted with Sanju Samson regaining some promising form against DC.
Chennai Super Kings register their first win after Sanju Samson's century
Chennai Super Kings batted first against the Delhi Capitals after having lost the first three matches in the tournament. Sanju Samson was one of the most anticipated players for CSK before the start of the season. However, the player failed to get past a single-digit score in the first three games.
Following massive criticism, Sanju returned with a massive hundred to get back at his critics. He played a standout innings for Chennai, scoring 115 runs unbeaten, striking at a massive 205.36. At the back of this, the Super Kings posted a massive 212 in their 20 overs.
Delhi Capitals batters also could not get themselves going, despite Pathum Nissanka and Tristan Stubbs failing to chase the massive total. Anshul Kamboj and Jamie Overton picked three and four wickets, respectively. CSK won the match by a margin of 23 runs.
