The dates for the next three editions of the SA20 have been announced. The 4th edition of the tournament will begin in December, while the 2027 and 2028 seasons of the tournament are all set to begin in January.

The announcement was made ahead of the playoffs of the ongoing SA20 2025. The next edition of the SA20 will begin from 26th December on Boxing Day. The league has been pushed back by a month because the South Africa National Cricket Team aren't scheduled to play any Test cricket this year. The national team is likely to play just white-ball games as it was mentioned by the director of Cricket South Africa recently.

The SA20 2027 and 2028 will be played in its original window in January-February. Both seasons are likely to begin on 9th January, with the final to take place on 14th and 13th February, respectively, in the two editions. The last two seasons of the tournament also were played in the January-Feburary window along with the current edition.

Confirming the Betway SA20 window for a three-year period allows the League to bring certainty to all stakeholders - SA20 commissioner Graeme Smith

SA20 commissioner Graeme Smith said that announcing dates for the next three editions allows stakeholders to get certainty. He also stressed that the 2026 edition, starting in December, will allow players to prepare for the T20 World Cup 2026. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he said:

"Confirming the Betway SA20 window for a three-year period allows the League to bring certainty to all stakeholders and assists in securing our place when planning the global calendar.

"We know fans respond particularly well to weekend and holiday fixtures, and with the ICC T20 World Cup in early February next year, our Season 4 dates provide the unique opportunity to capitalise on South Africa's peak cricket season and key public holidays."

Graeme Smith added that early planning allows them to look at an extended window from 2026-27 and optimize scheduling and logistics. He added:

"Early planning has also meant that we are able to look at an extended window from 2026-27 and this will optimise scheduling, logistics and the fan experience."

A working group made up of representatives from both the League and Cricket South Africa - SA20 official statement

But having SA20 to start Boxing Day might cost Cricket South Africa as well. This is because players like Joe Root and others will be missing the start due to international commitments. The league also will be clashing with the Big Bash League in Australia and the Bangladesh Premier League.

The SA20 released the official statement, saying: "a working group made up of representatives from both the League and Cricket South Africa."
