Former Indian keeper-batsman Saba Karim could not stop himself from praising MS Dhoni, who turned 40 on Wednesday. Fans worldwide wished the former Indian captain and one of the most iconic figures in Indian cricket a happy birthday. While hailing MS Dhoni, Saba Karim feels that BCCI should retire his jersey.
MS Dhoni is one of the most successful and shrewd captains in history. The keeper-batsman has won every single ICC Trophy for India in his 15-year international career and is recognized as one of the best finishers in limited-overs cricket. He retired from international cricket in 2020, his last match being the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup against New Zealand.
Saba Karim believes that not only MS Dhoni, but the BCCI needs to retire the jerseys of most Indian legends. The 53-year old reckons that the board should not allot the same number jersey to any other player to recognize the achievements of those who wore them previously. Karim underlined that it is also a sign of paying respect to the legends.
“I think not only MS Dhoni’s jersey, the BCCI must also preserve the jerseys of many other Indian legends. They must also ensure that the jersey number of that legend is not worn by anyone else. In this manner, one can recognize the achievements and the contributions of the greats of Indian cricket. Most importantly, by doing so you give some much-deserved respect to such legends,” Karim told on the Khelneeti podcast
I wish he keeps mentoring and guiding young players at the state level as well: Saba Karim
“Although he is no longer part of international cricket, I hope he can continue serving Indian cricket, just like he did all these years. He is grooming a lot of youngsters with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). I wish he keeps mentoring and guiding young players at the state level as well. If that happens, it will be great for the future of Indian cricket,” he added.
