Can you imagine Sachin Tendulkar playing for an Australian team? He played some of the most iconic knocks against Australia. He played for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). But Sachin in an Australian team? It sounds really wrong and bizarre.

But the Big Bash League (BBL) franchise had plans to bring Sachin Tendulkar out of his retirement to play at least one match for them in the Australian franchise league. In an official video, Eddie McGuire, the former President of the Melbourne Stars, reveals that they came up with the plan to bring Sachin Tendulkar out of retirement.

Official video reveals shocking claims

McGuire claims that they had an exclusive plan to bring the Master Blaster alongside the late great Shane Warne to represent their team for one night.

But why would they think to have Sachin on their side? As the former President of the franchise mentions, they were lacking star attractions on their side. So they thought to do something huge, something incredibly impactful, which could attract every cricket fan's eyes. With that thought, they decided to approach the Indian batting great.

Get Sachin Tendulkar: Former President of Melbourne Stars

“I was just thinking about the international angle because I was lobbying at times when they started taking all our players. Ridiculously, some were being picked up and not even playing. You’d have to go all the way to Tasmania, sit on the team bus, and then not get a game,” McGuire said in a video shared by the Melbourne Stars.

“I said, ‘Well, if you’re going to take four of my batsmen or four of my bowlers, at least allow me to bring in one international player.’ And I actually said at one stage, ‘If I can go and get Sachin Tendulkar, I’ll fill this ground five times over’,” he added.

They might have the plan, but it never saw the daylight. Sachin Tendulkar, who retired from international cricket in November 2013, never revised his decision and has stayed retired to date. However, the former head of the BBL franchise claims that they were very keen to bring the icon out of retirement.

“I said, ‘Just for one game, if we get him to come and play in the grand final. You’ve taken three or four of my best batsmen, so let me bring in one. Let me get Sachin Tendulkar as our batsman and Warnie as our bowler, and let’s see how many people turn up. We’d have to put screens out in the park. It would be the biggest cricket match in Australian history, all in one night at a Big Bash T20 game,” he recalled.

Sachin played for an Australian cricket team once

Tendulkar and Warne played together for the same team during the Cricket All Stars series in 2015. And in 2020, for the first time in history, Tendulkar played in a Yellow jersey for the Bushfire Cricket Bash to raise funds for victims of the Australian wildfires.
