India suffered a rare defeat against Ireland in their first match in the ongoing tour of the United Kingdom. India, the champions of the 2026 T20 World Cup, went down against the home team, in the first match of the tour on June 26.
Against the home side's 182, India managed to score only 148 runs against all ten wickets. Ireland won the match by 34 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the 2-match T20I series.
Ireland won the match by a 34-run margin
The entire Men in Blue batting order was bundled inside the 19th over of the second innings. Ireland’s Matthew Hollard and Matthew Humphreys took 3 wickets each, effectively dismantling the batting lineup of the Indian cricket team.
On paper, the Indian cricket team looked a lot stronger than the hosts. But the reality is now telling a whole new story. Why did India lose against a lower-ranked team? There will be multiple reasons behind tonight's result, which the team management will have to address before the second match.
With the win, the home side takes a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series. To save the series, at any cost, the Men in Blue will have to ensure a win in the second. The next match is scheduled to be hosted on Sunday, June 28.
More pressure will be on Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer, who made his return in the format after almost a gap of 2 years, that too, as the captain of the team, replacing the 2026 T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav, will have to carry extra pressure on his shoulders after the poor result. Fans across social media platforms have also raised their voices against the appointment of Shreyas Iyer as the leader of the team.
Iyer had the opportunity to save the team from defeat if he had played a significant knock against the Irish bowlers. But he could not. Like most of the batters of the Indian line-up, the newly appointed captain also merched off the field, losing his wicket cheaply.
Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for only 3 runs off 7 balls. Ahead of the second fixture, the Irish cricketers will feel more confident against the champions of the T20 World Cup.
Abhishek Sharma was the only batter who displayed his natural batting, scoring 50 runs from 20 balls with seven 4s and a couple of 6s. From the middle-order, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma, and Axar Patel tried to create some resistance, but their efforts were not enough to claim the target score.
