Salman Ali Agha named new Pakistan Test and ODI captain following series loss to Bangladesh

Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has called for Salman Ali Agha to be named the new Pakistan Test and One Day International captain. After his consistent performances, Amir said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should appoint Salman to lead the national team ahead of important tournaments.

Salman delivered a strong batting performance against Bangladesh. The right-handed batter scored a brilliant century in the third match on Sunday, March 15, in Dhaka. However, the Shaheen Afridi-led team suffered an 11-run defeat and lost the bilateral series against Bangladesh.

"It's the right time for the PCB to appoint Salman Agha as ODI and Test captain. Otherwise, we will regret it in the 2027 World Cup. No other Pakistani player, not even Babar Azam, has been as consistent as him in the recent past," Amir said.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi reportedly decided to remove Salman Ali Agha as the T20I captain. Pakistan failed to reach the semifinals of the T20 World Cup for the third consecutive time. The Men in Blue ended their campaign with a consolation win over Sri Lanka in their final Super 8 match in Pallekele on Saturday.

Salman Ali Agha Delivers a Spectacular Fighting Century

Chasing a target of 291 runs, Pakistan’s top order collapsed early at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. With the team struggling at 62 for five, Salman Ali Agha played a brilliant innings.

The right-handed batter scored 106 runs off 98 deliveries, including nine boundaries and four sixes. He also built important partnerships to keep the chase alive.

Agha first added a 71-run stand with Saad Masood. Later, he shared a 52-run partnership with Shaheen Afridi before Taskin Ahmed dismissed him in the 48th over of the match.

Bangladesh Captain Praises His Strong Batting Lineup

Earlier in the match, Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan scored his maiden One Day International century. Towhid Hridoy also contributed with an unbeaten 48 runs.

Later, Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed dismantled the Pakistan batting order. Rahman and Taskin took three and four crucial wickets, respectively, for Bangladesh.

After the thrilling 11-run victory, Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz praised his teammates. Miraz said he was proud of the team’s batting performance and highlighted how several batters dominated the Pakistan bowling attack.

"It was an excellent wicket. If we could get 300, definitely it would be better. But it’s still well. We’re playing well, especially with Tamim, the way he batted. And definitely, they played really, really well. And then Litton Das and Shanto, Towhid, they played really well."
