England National Cricket Team player Sam Billings has expressed his desire to take over the white-ball captaincy of the team. He said that he has had great success as a leader in the last few years and is confident of making a difference.

England National Cricket Team are in a hunt for a new captain in the white-ball cricket. This is because Jos Buttler stepped down as a leader after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where his team lost every game and faced a group-stage exit.

Jos Buttler took the decision after he came under massive scanner for his poor performances as a leader. Under his leadership, England suffered a group-stage exit in the ICC World Cup 2023, reached the semi-final in the T20 World Cup 2024, and then had a debacle in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

I feel like I can add value - Sam Billings on England captaincy

Amid the search for a new skipper, Sam Billings has put his hand up. He said that he hasn't had conversations with anyone but his record as a captain is pretty good. Speaking to BBC, he said:

“I’d be honoured, if you would jump at an opportunity like that. I feel like I can add value. I’ve not had a conversation with anyone, but from a leadership point of view, I’ve loved the time over the past few years where I’ve had some real success. The talent in domestic cricket in this country is always there, certainly in white-ball cricket. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

As a player, I’m looking at that thinking ‘Why not, let’s try to get back in that side - Sam Billings

Sam Billings talked about the depth of English cricket, saying that he is keen to make a comeback. He said:

"It will just be a tweak here or there, picking a nice, balanced side. It should provide a great opportunity for all of us in England. If you’re going to stick your hand up and perform well, there are opportunities up for grabs, or there should be, in those formats. As a player, I’m looking at that thinking ‘Why not, let’s try to get back in that side’.”

Sam Billings, who hasn't played for England since 2022, led Oval Invincibles to two back-to-back The Hundred titles and also won the ILT20 in the UAE with Dubai Capitals in February. He so far has played three Tests, 28 ODIs, and 37 T20s for England.

There’s no better man in terms of captaincy and as an all-round cricketer - Sam Billings on Ben Stokes

There have been several reports that claimed that Ben Stokes is likely to take over the charge of the ODI team. While Harry Brook will be leading the team in the T20I cricket.

Sam Billings talked about Ben Stokes, saying that there is no better player than him as captain and as an all-round cricketer. He stressed that the left-hander is focused on Tests and also spoke about Harry Brook. He explained:

"I can’t speak highly enough of Ben Stokes. There’s no better man in terms of captaincy and as an all-round cricketer. But his priority is the Ashes and the five-Test series against India. He is probably in a position where he can answer where his body can take him. Harry Brook is another one who fits similar criteria. You’ve got to balance it out. Playing all formats for England has never been tougher.”
