Australian teenage sensation Sam Konstas, who had a heated on-field exchange with Virat Kohli during his Test debut, has revealed that the Indian great is actually one of his cricketing idols. Konstas showed his maturity by acknowledging Kohli’s influence on his game while naming his perfect cricketer.
During his Test debut in Melbourne, Sam Konstas impressed with an aggressive approach against India's bowling attack, including Jasprit Bumrah. He rattled the Indian side, who attempted to unsettle the youngster with on-field tactics. Virat Kohli made a shoulder bump with Konstas between overs.
I’ve Grown Up Watching Him Play - Sam Konstas on Virat Kohli
Before the opening Test against the West Indies at Kensington Oval, Sam Konstas was asked to create his 'perfect batter'. He named AB de Villiers for his fearless 360-degree stroke play and aggression.
Konstas picked 'best in the world' Steve Smith for his off-side play, and Virat Kohli for his exceptional wristwork and leg-side play. Konstas also revealed he grew up watching and idolizing the Indian star.
“AB de Villiers with aggression... he hits 360 and takes the game on. Steve Smith – best player in the world in my opinion... big honour playing with him. Kohli – yeah, I feel his wrists are incredible, to be honest. The way he accesses the leg side... I’ve been growing up watching him play. Big idol,” Konstas said.
So, Thank You, Jos Buttler for Those - Sam Konstas
Konstas also credited Jos Buttler for helping improve his batting, adding that he had been learning by watching the England star’s videos. He picked Jos Buttler while making his perfect batter for his ramp shot.
“I’ve been watching quite a few videos... so thank you Buttler for those,” he said with a smile.

Konstas scored 60 off just 52 balls in his Test debut. The ICC later penalized Kohli with a 20% fine on his match fee and a demerit point for breaching the code of conduct. While Konstas didn’t react to the incident at the time, he responded in the best way possible.
Will Sam Konstas Cement His Spot As Australia’s Test Opener?
Sam Konstas struggled to maintain form through the remainder of the India series and was left out of the squad for the Sri Lanka tour. He was also excluded from the playing XI in the WTC final against South Africa, where Australia opted to open with Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja.
The pair failed to provide solid starts, and the team eventually suffered defeat. With Labuschagne dropped from the playing XI, Konstas is set to open alongside Khawaja in the upcoming Test series against the West Indies.
Australia, led by Pat Cummins, are set to begin their 2025–27 World Test Championship campaign with a three-match Test series in the Caribbean. The first Test will commence on Wednesday, June 25, at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
