The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 went Australia's way and the hosts had plenty of positives in it. One of the biggest positives was the performance of the opener Sam Konstas. While the sample size is still small, Konstas has shown that he is a character in the cricket field.
Konstas was involved in various confrontations in the two Tests that he played. Both of those confrontations came against two big Indian players - Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. Former Australia cricketer Damien Fleming has opened up on Konstas' impact on the Indian players.
Fleming feels that Konstas was able to create a spark amongst the Indian players with his attitude which a lot of players have failed to do. He also praised the youngster for remaining unfazed despite all the sledging from Indian players on the field.
Damien Fleming speaks on Sam Konstas' impact on Indian players
While writing for his column for 'The Roar', Damien Fleming was shocked to see Jasprit Bumrah react the way he had after picking up Usman Khawaja's wicket in Australia's first innings of the Sydney Test.
"I've never seen (Jasprit) Bumrah react like that. So he sparked something in the Indians that not a lot of people have. And when he (Sam Konstas) batted, he didn't look like he was fazed from all the chat from the Indians," Fleming wrote in his column.
Not only Bumrah, but Sam Konstas also had a confrontation with Virat Kohli in his debut Test. He was also seen to be engaging with the crowd well and making them gestures related to shoulder barge.
What happened between Sam Konstas and Jasprit Bumrah?
During the dying stages of Day 1 of the Sydney Test, Jasprit Bumrah was involved in a heated exchange with Sam Konstas. Bumrah was bowling the last over of the day with Usman Khawaja on strike. The batter looked to take his time in order to ensure that it was the last over of the day.
Jasprit Bumrah was clearly unhappy with Khawaja's behavior and asked the batter to be ready. During this point, non-striker Sam Konstas jumped into the scene and said a few words to Bumrah.
Bumrah responded back and it led to a war of words between the two players before the umpire intervened. Fittingly, Bumrah picked up Khawaja's wicket off the last ball of the day and immediately looked back at Konstas. The Indian players were clearly pumped and celebrated wildly with Konstas around them.
Damien Fleming hails Jasprit Bumrah
Damien Fleming heaped praises on Jasprit Bumrah for his brilliance throughout the series. However, he feels that Travis Head was an equal contender to win the Player of the Series award for his belligerence with the bat. He also reckons that India missed Mohammed Shami in the series which cost their chances.
"Bumrah deserved to be player of the series with 32 wickets, but there's an argument to say that Travis Head won this trophy," Fleming claimed.
"Bumrah is an absolute star, probably the greatest touring fast bowler that I've seen. Mohammed Siraj probably showed that he's a handy back-up bowler. But they need that third seamer – they really missed Mohammed Shami," he observed.
Meanwhile, Australia won the series 3-1 and clinched its spot in the World Test Championship Final where they will face South Africa at Lord's. The match will be played from June 11. On the other hand, India were knocked out of the race for the WTC Final.
