England all-rounder Samit Patel announced his retirement from domestic cricket after playing in a banned franchise league. The veteran all-rounder was still active and even looking for another English domestic cricket, but one decision has forced him to make that tough call.

The 41-year-old took part in the World Legends Pro T20 League in Goa earlier this year, because of which he was not allowed to play in the T20 Blast this summer. The matter of fact is that he is not allowed to play domestic cricket in England for 12 months.

Samit Patel retires after ECB ban shock

Actually, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had already made it clear that English players will not be allowed to play domestic cricket for 12 months if they have participated in a "disapproved" league like the World Legends Pro T20 League.

As a result, Patel decided to abide by domestic cricket, as waiting for one year at the age of 41 did not make much sense. However, the all-rounder is ready to play franchise cricket across the world. He is also thinking about moving into coaching or other roles in the game.

He has even shown interest in working with Trent Rockets during The Hundred. Apart from that, he will continue playing club cricket on weekends to stay connected to the game.

Samit Patel was quoted as saying by BBC Sport, “I probably wouldn't have played it [the World Legends League]. There was a lot of uncertainty about whether we could play or not, but we can't get past that now. It just brought this stuff forward for me. I would have played this summer. I had some chats with some countries; we weren't quite at a contract signing, but we were in talks, so probably would've gotten a last-minute deal somewhere.”

Samit Patel tries his luck for the England selector role

Last week, Samit decided to try his luck for the England selector role after having a conversation with the team director, Rob Key. However, the former England all-rounder would actually be surprised if he got the job. But still, he is searching for other opportunities.

He shared, “It was just a blasé thing, where I rang Rob [Key] and said, 'I'm twiddling my thumbs for a bit.' He goes, 'Well, why don't you just apply for this role?' I say, 'Alright, chuck me the form and I'll apply for it. 'Although I'd be surprised if I got it.”

Samit Patel's career numbers

Patel played 6 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 18 T20Is for England between 2008 and 2015, scoring 151, 482, and 189 runs, respectively. He also has 38 international wickets to his name. Additionally, he made 629 appearances for Nottinghamshire over 22 years.

He then joined Derbyshire in 2024. Patel also has 12692 First-Class runs and 357 runs to his name. He also has an impressive List A (6342 runs plus 236 wickets in 253 matches) and T20 (6939 runs and 364 wickets in 429 matches) record.
