Former Pakistan skipper Sana Mir sparked a big controversy after referring to “Azad Kashmir” while speaking about batter Natalia Pervaiz during the Pakistan-Bangladesh match. Following criticism, the cricketer-turned-commentator issued a clarification over the matter, calling it a misunderstanding.
Indian fans accused her of politicizing cricket after a clip of her commentary went viral on social media. Her remarks came in the aftermath of the Asia Cup 2025 final between India and Pakistan, where tensions were already high both on and off the field. Fans demanded action, with some tagging the ICC and BCCI.
Things Are Being Blown Out Of Proportion - Sana Mir
In response, Sana Mir stated that her words had been misinterpreted and were never intended to offend. She described the controversy as unnecessary, adding that it was unfortunate for sports figures to face such undue pressure.
“It’s unfortunate how things are being blown out of proportion and people in sports are being subjected to unnecessary pressure. It is sad that this requires an explanation at the public level,” she wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Natalia Pervaiz comes from Bandala, a town located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). The 29-year-old cricketer has represented Pakistan at the international level, with her roots in this politically sensitive area drawing added attention.
It Is Part of the Story Telling - Sana Mir
Sana Mir said that she shared the background of Natalia Pervaiz rather than make any political statement. Mir urged people not to politicize her remarks, adding that there was no intent to offend anyone.
"My comment about a Pakistan player's hometown was only meant to highlight the challenges she faced of coming from a certain region in Pakistan and her incredible journey. It is part of the storytelling we do as commentators as where the players come from. I did that today for two other players coming from other regions, too," Mir continued.
"Please don’t politicise it. As a commentator on the World Feed, we are meant to focus on the sport, teams, and players, highlighting inspiring stories of grit and perseverance. There is no malice in my heart or any intention to hurt sentiments," he added.
I Am Also Attaching the Screen Shot - Sana Mir
The former Pakistan skipper also shared a screenshot from the ESPNCricinfo website. However, the site later updated its database to list the region as “Pakistan-administered Kashmir.”
"I am also attaching the screenshot of where I research most of my players from, whether from Pakistan or any other country. I realise that they have changed it by now, but this is what I was referring to," she concluded.
Amidst this controversy, the Pakistan women’s team began their World Cup campaign with a loss against Bangladesh. They were bowled out for just 129 in 38.3 overs. Only Rameen Shamim (23) and captain Fatima Sana (22) managed to reach double figures for Pakistan.
Bangladesh chased down the target comfortably with 113 balls to spare. Rubya Haider scored 54 runs and guided the team to a seven-wicket victory.
Pakistan are set to face India on Sunday, October 5, in Colombo. India holds an unbeaten World Cup record against Pakistan.
