American tech entrepreneur Sanjay Govil is looking to expand his cricket business by buying a stake in a Big Bash League (BBL) team. He is interested in purchasing either 50% or the entire ownership of a BBL club as he looks to build a strong collection of T20 teams around the world.
Govil already owns Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket (MLC) and holds a stake in Welsh Fire in England's The Hundred. Govil now sees the Big Bash League as another big opportunity, as he believes that sports teams will remain valuable even as artificial intelligence continues to grow. Amid this, Jake Fraser-McGurk creates Australian cricket history with fastest-ever fifty.
Sanjay Govil eyes Melbourne Renegades, but refuses to enter BBL bidding war
Cricket Australia approved the privatisation of the Big Bash League last month after months of debate. The first stage of the Melbourne Renegades' sale process has now started, with Cricket Australia, Cricket Victoria, and their adviser Raine Group inviting investors to show interest in buying the BBL club outright.
Several Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners are also expected to explore opportunities. The aim is to identify a preferred buyer before the BBL 2026-27 season begins on December 12. An outright sale would give the new owner complete control of the club and its operations.
Sanjay Govil has confirmed that the Melbourne Renegades are on his radar, but he knows that competition for the team could be tough. He does not want to enter an expensive bidding battle and plans to focus on deals that suit his business goals.
Govil was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo, "I'm interested in the Renegades; it's on the radar. But I think there are going to be a lot of big players who will be interested. I need to focus on what I am capable of doing. I don't want to get into a bidding war.”
Sanjay Govil sets sights on Hobart Hurricanes
The Renegades are not the only BBL team that has caught Govil's attention. The American tech entrepreneur is also interested in the Hobart Hurricanes, a team that has connections with Washington Freedom through several players. Amid this, Eoin Morgan, Aaron Finch among 5 famous candidates for Mumbai Indians head coach role.
Ricky Ponting, who serves as the Washington Freedom head coach for the past three seasons, is also the Hobart Hurricanes' head of strategy and a well-known figure in Tasmania. Govil believes that smaller franchises like Hobart could give him a better chance to make a strong impact.
He has pointed to Washington Freedom and Welsh Fire as examples of the kind of teams he likes to manage and develop. Govil added, “(Hurricanes)... that's our size of team. If you look at the Welsh Fire and Freedom, we have sort of smaller franchises compared to others. There are the big boys who want to go after the big teams. I love Hobart; they are a winning team. We can make more impact in those teams.”
Sanjay Govil eyes investment in Hobart Hurricanes’ billion-dollar stadium project
Cricket Tasmania is also planning for a major new opportunity. A billion-dollar, closed-roof stadium is planned to become the Hurricanes' home ground from 2031.
The Cricket Tasmania hopes the proposed stadium will help attract investors, and Govil has shown interest in investing in the project. However, he would first need to study the costs and business benefits.
Govil is already funding a new cricket ground for Washington Freedom in Frederick. The project is expected to cost tens of millions of dollars and could be ready for the 2027 MLC season. He said, “I absolutely would be interested. Would have to look at the economics and all that stuff, but I'm all for making sure that we have the best facilities.”
AI cannot replace sport: Sanjay Govil explains why he wants to buy a BBL team
Govil, who was born in Montreal and grew up in India before building his fortune in the United States, said that sports ownership is a way to diversify his investments.
He believes live sport, teamwork, and the connection between teams and fans offer something that artificial intelligence cannot replace.
He signed off by saying, “Sport is something that AI cannot replace in the future. It's a great asset. It's a great diversification asset. It's fun. It's sports. It's teamwork. It encompasses everything that people enjoy. To me, the BBL is probably the number two T20 league in the world. I think it's a great opportunity to get into.”
