Sanjay Manjrekar takes dig at Ravi Shastri stand at Wankhede, insulting post goes viral
PC: X

Former Mumbai teammate Sanjay Manjrekar seems not very pleased with the inauguration of the Ravi Shastri stand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, and the cricketer has revealed it while making a blunt statement.

The Mumbai Cricket Association has produced the most iconic players in India, especially batters. From the legendary Sachin Tendulkar to the World Cup-winning skipper Rohit Sharma, all have made their way to international cricket, playing their early matches at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

While the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Rohit Sharma have stands named after them at the iconic venue, another local boy from Mumbai, Ravi Shastri, who made a long way up in international cricket, rightfully deserved one with his name. The MCA recently announced the inauguration of the Ravi Shastri stand at the Wankhede.

Sanjay Manjrekar launches an attack on Ravi Shastri with a controversial request for the MCA

Following the announcement, one of Ravi Shastri's former teammates, Sanjay Manjrekar, made a quirky and insulting remark to the MCA. Though no names were mentioned, it seemed an ugly take on the latest achievement of the former Mumbai cricketer.

In his post on X, Sanjay Manjrekar wrote, "Requesting @MumbaiCricAssoc to keep some gates & stands for future managements also, to name after players."

Though the message seems like a lighthearted claim, the timing of this post has led to controversy. Sanjay Manjrekar, who also hails from Mumbai and went on to play international cricket for India, might also be questionably jealous of his teammates' success.

"The first time I came to the Wankhede Stadium, I was just 12" - Ravi Shastri

After having received the huge honour, the former Indian coach looked flattered as he recalled the first time he walked through those gates at the iconic venue as a 12-year-old back in his childhood days.

"The first time I came to the Wankhede Stadium, I was just 12. I took a bus and a train, found my way to the North Stand, and sat there watching cricket. That was 1974.

"I was a little boy, and I couldn’t stay the whole day. But that’s where it started — Wankhede’s famous North Stand, where the college and school students, along with coaches, sat together. The most knowledgeable crowd in the country. That’s where cricket was understood," he mentioned in his column for the Indian Express.

Ravi Shastri continued and went on to mention that having a stand named after him inside the iconic stadium is more than a dream come true for him. He continued, "To say a stand named after me inside Wankhede is a dream would be an understatement."

'My mother is the most proud,' Shastri credits the immense support of his loved ones

Shastri could not stop his emotions from being expressed, as he mentioned that her mother is the happiest person after her son received such a prestigious honour. He also mentioned that no one is prouder than her.

"When my mother heard that the stand would be named after me, no one was more proud. She is a cricket encyclopedia. She watches everything.

"My whole family will be there, along with close friends and the cricketers I played with — from school to university to college to the Ranji Trophy. I know the sweat and blood that went into it. They know it too," Shastri added.
