Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has ruled himself out of the race to become Team India's new coach. Team India will have a new head coach soon as Rahul Dravid's tenure will come to an end after the conclusion of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Dravid has been in charge of the team since 2021. While his original contract came to an end in November last year after the ODI World Cup, the BCCI managed to convince him to accept an extension. However, the former India skipper has decided to part ways with the Indian team this time and the BCCI has already started looking for his replacement.
They advertised for the post last month and the last date to submit the application was May 27. According to several reports, former India opener Gautam Gambhir is the front-runner to replace Dravid as the new coach. While only time will tell who replaces Dravid in the coming days, Sanjay Manjrekar has made it clear that he won't be that person.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, the former cricketer said that he loves being a pundit and is not willing to swap that role for a coaching job.
"I haven't coached any team in my life. I just enjoy this job (punditry) too much," said Sanjay Manjrekar.
Gautam Gambhir on becoming India's head coach:
Gautam Gambhir recently dropped a huge hint about becoming Team India's head coach. Responding to a kid's question, the former India batsman said that he would love to ply his trade as India's head coach.
"I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and more across the globe as well," said Gambhir.
Just like Manjrekar, Gambhir has not coached any national or state team so far. However, he has the experience of being the mentor of two IPL teams. Gambhir served as the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 and 2023 before plying his trade for Kolkata Knight Riders this year and guiding them to their third IPL title.
