Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are reportedly in talks again over a possible trade involving Sanju Samson ahead of IPL 2026. Sanju Samson had requested the Rajasthan Royals (RR) to release him before the upcoming IPL 2026 auction.

The Indian wicketkeeper-batter made this move after the ongoing tensions with the Royals, which reportedly began when the franchise released Jos Buttler before the 2024 mega auction. Earlier, Chennai Super Kings had shown interest in signing Samson, but eventually stepped aside.

The RR were reportedly asking for CSK’s core players, and they denied. Even the Delhi Capitals (DC) were involved in discussions with the Royals over the possibility of acquiring Samson. The Kerala star had previously played for the Delhi-based franchise in 2016 and 2017.

However, the RR is demanding a high price for Samson, as they are reportedly seeking South African batter Tristan Stubbs, along with an uncapped Indian player, in return. The Delhi Capitals have yet to respond to RR’s demands, leaving the situation in uncertainty.

Amidst the uncertainty, the Chennai Super Kings have stepped back into the race for Sanju Samson ahead of the retentions. It is being said that the deal could include a top CSK player. As per RevSportz reporter Rohit Juglan that top player is Ravindra Jadeja.

RR owner Manoj Badale, who recently arrived in Mumbai from London, is exploring multiple options and has opened communication lines not just with CSK but also with franchises like Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Delhi Capitals (DC).

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals explore 'Key' player swap

It is being said that a key CSK player is likely part of the negotiations, and the franchise has already reached out to check if he is willing to move to Rajasthan. This kind of trade could allow both teams to balance their squads while giving players a fresh opportunity to make an impact.

The situation is expected to become clearer in the coming days, as final decisions will depend on player consent and strategic considerations from both franchises.

A Cricbuzz report reads: “Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals have re-established contact over a potential trade involving Sanju Samson, and it would not be a surprise if a top CSK player is included in the deal. A word has been sent to the player to check if he is comfortable moving to RR.”

CSK to finalize retentions on November 10-11 as Sanju Samson trade talks heat up

With the IPL 2026 auction scheduled for the mid-December window, teams are looking to strengthen their lineups before the retention deadline ends on November 15.

CSK is set to have an internal meeting involving MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Stephen Fleming on November 10 and 11 to finalize their retentions for the coming season, and that’s when Samson’s deal will be finalized.

Notably, the Royals had already asked for Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, or Shivam Dube in a trade with CSK. The franchise has rejected Dube’s release, as he is their key T20 all-rounder and a long-term asset.

Now, RR may push for Jadeja or Gaikwad, but CSK is unlikely to let them go, given Jadeja’s long tenure and Gaikwad’s role as captain. Now, it remains to be seen who will leave CSK to bring Samson on to the board ahead of the auction.
