The road to the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has turned chaotic, with Bangladesh’s participation now under serious doubt and Scotland suddenly entering the picture as a possible replacement. With less than three weeks left before the tournament begins on February 7, nothing is finalized yet.

Political tension sparks the T20 World Cup crisis

The problem started with growing political tension between India and Bangladesh that led to Mustafizur Rahman's IPL 2026 ouster. Bangladesh has clearly said it does not feel comfortable sending its team to India for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 because of security concerns.

Since the tournament will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) to move all its group matches from India to Sri Lanka. Bangladesh also suggested another option to the ICC to solve the issue.

They wanted a group swap with Ireland so that the Irish side would play in India while Bangladesh would stay in Sri Lanka for the group stage. Ireland’s all group stage matches are scheduled in Sri Lanka, which made this proposal seem practical to BCB.

However, the ICC reportedly refused both requests. The governing body decided not to change venues, groups, or the match schedule. This firm stand by the ICC created fresh uncertainty. Bangladesh has still not officially confirmed whether it will take part in the tournament.

This silence has opened the door for talk about a replacement team. If Bangladesh pulls out, Scotland stands next in line as the highest-ranked team not already qualified for the 20-team event. The ICC had reportedly warned Bangladesh to make a final decision or risk losing its spot.

Recently, ICC officials met the BCB officials in Dhaka and informed them that they had time only until January 21 to confirm participation. The reports also suggested that the ICC made it clear that Scotland would likely replace Bangladesh if they chose not to play in India.

T20 World Cup 2026: BCB denies any deadline claim

However, the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s media committee chairman, Amjad Hossain, strongly denied receiving any deadline from the ICC. He said that ICC officials did not give any such warning during their visit to Dhaka.

Amjad Hossain was quoted as saying by Daily Star: “Last Saturday, on January 17, an ICC representative came, and our cricket board representatives held a meeting with him. Regarding World Cup participation, there was an issue with the venue, and we informed them of our reluctance to play there. We requested an alternate venue, and we held detailed discussions with the representatives.

They told us that they will inform the ICC about the issues and will let us know about the decision later on. In regard to these talks, they haven’t mentioned a specific date or when they will let us know. They just told us that they will let us know when the next discussion will take place. Thank you.”

Presently, the situation is like that: Bangladesh continues to demand that matches be shifted to Sri Lanka, while the ICC remains firm and refuses to make any changes.

T20 World Cup 2026: ICC yet to contact Scotland

Meanwhile, Scotland finds itself in a strange position amidst the possible replacement talks, as the ICC has not contacted Cricket Scotland regarding the matter. BBC Sport reported that no official discussion has taken place between the ICC and Cricket Scotland over the swap.

Since the ICC has not yet made any official proposal, Scotland has also decided not to approach the governing body on its own, showing respect for Bangladesh and the ongoing situation surrounding the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.

Notably, the Scotland team narrowly missed qualification after finishing fourth in last year’s European qualifiers. The Netherlands and Italy took the two available spots, leaving Scotland outside the T20 World Cup. However, Scotland could receive a surprise entry if Bangladesh steps away. But as things stand, the ICC is silent and yet to make a final call.
