Delhi Capitals have signed up Afghanistan batter Sediqullah Atal as a replacement for England's Harry Brook, the franchise announced on Wednesday (May 7).

For the second year in a row, Brook pulled out of IPL citing personal reasons. Delhi Capitals had signed him for INR 6.25 crore in the last mega auction.

BCCI has banned Brook

Following his withdrawal from the IPL, the BCCI also banned him from the IPL for two years.

In the wake of the incident, the BCCI also issued new guidelines regarding the players' decision to withdraw from the IPL at the last minute, stating: "Any player who registers in the auction and, after getting picked, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will get banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for 2 seasons," the rule states.

Sediqullah Atal replaces Harry Brook:

While Harry Brook pulled out of the tournament even before it started, Delhi Capitals have signed up Sediqullah Atal after playing 11 games. The highly-rated Afghanistan top-order batsman has played 49 T20s so far and has scored 1507 runs at an average of 34 including 13 half-centuries.

Sediqullah Atal grabbed the limelight for the first time in 2023 when he hit 48 runs an a single over during the Kabul Premier League. He had gone on to score 118 runs off 56 balls during that innings. He also scored a century in the final of the tournament.

Last year, Sediqullah Atal starred with the bat to help Afghanistan win the ACC Men’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup. He finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer, scoring 368 runs in 5 matches.

DC announces official signing

"We are excited to welcome Atal to the Delhi Capitals. He is an exciting, young talent who has impressed everyone with his performances for both the Afghanistan youth and senior teams. Going into this important phase of the tournament, his presence will certainly add depth to our batting lineup, said Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals are in contention to qualify for the playoffs this season, They are currently at the fifth spot in the points table with 6 wins from 11 games. Their next game is against Punjab Kings on May 8.
