Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), reportedly got into a heated argument with Ness Wadia, co-owner of Punjab Kings (PBKS), in Mumbai. The debate took place at the meeting between IPL franchise owners and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials on Wednesday, July 31.

The BCCI and IPL franchise owners discussed the number of player retentions before the IPL 2025 mega auction. The discussion turned into a debate about player retention between owners. Some owners, including Shah Rukh Khan and Kavya Maran of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), opposed the mega auction.

Kiran Kumar Grandhi (Delhi Capitals), Sanjiv Goenka (Lucknow Super Giants), Rupa Gurunath (Chennai Super Kings), and Manoj Badale (Rajasthan Royals) were among the owners present at the important meeting in Mumbai. The Ambanis, Mumbai Indians (MI) owners, attended the meeting via video conference.

A mega auction is scheduled to take place later this year ahead of the IPL 2025 season. The last mega auction was held in 2022, where teams could retain up to four players, with a limit of three Indian and two overseas players. Successful sides like Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians struggled after the auction.

Shah Rukh Khan Gets Into Heated Argument With Ness Wadia

According to a report in Cricbuzz, the main focus of the meeting between the BCCI and IPL team owners was the upcoming mega auction. The report added that Shah Rukh Khan had a heated argument with Ness Wadia regarding the number of retentions allowed in the mega auction.

The Knight Riders delivered an exceptional performance in the IPL 2024 season. They dominated throughout the group stage and won the IPL title by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in both Qualifier 1 and the final match. In contrast, the Punjab Kings finished ninth with only five wins in 14 matches.

There Is No Animosity Here - Ness Wadia

After the meeting, Ness Wadia refuted any heated conversation with Shah Rukh Khan, stating there was no animosity between them. Wadia emphasized the need to consider all stakeholders and make decisions in everyone’s best interest.

"I have known Shah Rukh for more than 25 years. There is no animosity here. Everyone gave their views, and they had their opinions. At the end of the day, you have to look at all the stakeholders and do what's best for all. That's most important," the co-owner of Punjab Kings said.

Take These Recommendations To The IPL Governing Council - BCCI

The BCCI released an official statement regarding their meeting with IPL franchise owners. The statement noted that franchise owners provided feedback on player regulations and commercial matters such as merchandising and licensing.

"The franchise owners tabled feedback on player regulations and other commercial aspects, including central merchandising, licensing, and gaming. The BCCI will now take these recommendations to the IPL Governing Council for further deliberation and evaluation before formulating the IPL player regulations," the BCCI release said, as quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

The BCCI will take the recommendations to the IPL Governing Council for further deliberation and evaluation of player regulations. The board is expected to update IPL franchises on any rules or changes by the end of August.
