Shahid Afridi appeals to the Pakistani public to back their government's decisions
With the rising price of Petrol in the country, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has asked the citizens of Pakistan to back their government and support them through these tough times.
Speaking in a video message amid the situation, Afridi said: "Assalamualaikum friends, I am Shahid Afridi. Because of the war, the global energy crisis that the world is facing right now, Pakistan, Alhamdulillah, is still in a much better position than many countries."
"Supporting the government and backing them is the most important thing. As Pakistanis, we should try to follow the steps that the government has taken so that there is no obstacle in the progress of the country," he added.
Petrol prices rise to an all-time high in Pakistan
The ongoing war between the US and the other Middle Eastern nations, Israel and Iran, has led to a massive crisis for commercial fuels in India. This has led to massive inflation in Pakistan and several nations that are affected by the same.
The new prices mark an increase of 42.7 percent in petrol prices and 54.9 percent in the price of diesel. The new prices were settled at PKR 458 and PKR 520 for Petrol and diesel, respectively, after the Pakistan government increased the prices by PKR 137 and PKR 184, respectively.
"The decision made today is that, as per international markets, after the increase in the petrol prices, the new price will be 458.40 rupees ($1.64 per litre), which will be effective from tomorrow (Friday)," read the statement issued by Pakistani minister Ali Pervaiz Malik.
Fans slam Shahid Afridi, labelling him as 'shameless'
While the former Pakistani skipper, who has not had any specific political orientation in the recent past, made this claim as he focused on collective responsibility, urging the Pakistani citizens to remain patient with cooperative and government measures.
Some have praised the Pakistani cricketer, claiming that it is good to see him taking collective responsibility for a social cause; others have claimed that he should have opposed the growing prices of fuel in the country. Many have labelled Shahid Afridi as shameless, worsening the everyday struggle of the common people.
