Shakib Al Hasan, the renowned Bangladeshi all-rounder, has landed in serious legal trouble after being named in a murder case in Dhaka.
Shakib Al Hasan is accused of being involved in the murder of Rubel Islam, with the complaint filed by the victim’s father, Rafiqul Islam, according to local media reports.
Shakib Al Hasan, a former Awami League Parliament Member (MP) from Magura-1, faced backlash from fans following his silence during the anti-government protests in the country.
Sheikh Hasina fled to India after resigning from her position as Prime Minister of Bangladesh earlier this month.
When Sheikh Hasina fled to India, other MPs also left the country; the former Bangladesh skipper was participating in the Canada Global T20 League. The 37-year-old all-rounder is currently in Pakistan for the two-match Test series, which is part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle.
Shakib Al Hasan Named In Murder Case
As reported by Bangladesh News 24, former BCB president Nazmul Hassan and a list of 156 others are included in the murder case.
Several organizations, including the Bangladesh Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Shechhashebok League, Sramik League, and others, were named in the case.
A murder case has been lodged against Shakib at the Adabor police station. Shakib is listed as the 28th accused in the killing of garment worker Rubel.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman, and 156 other individuals have also been accused in the case.
Rafiqul Islam, father of deceased garment worker Rubel, filed a case at the Adabor police station in Dhaka on Thursday.
According to the case statement, Rubel participated in a protest march on August 5. He was shot due to the actions and support of the accused, including direct and indirect instructions.
Shakib Al Hasan Has Played This Game For So Long - Najmul Hossain Shanto
Last week, the interim government permitted Shakib to play in the Test series in Pakistan. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto stated that the all-rounder’s political situation should not impact his performance. Shanto emphasized that Shakib’s experience would help the team during the series.
"He has played this game for so long, so he knows his role and how to prepare himself. I am not thinking about his political career," Bangladesh skipper and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said at a press conference in Rawalpindi on August 20.
"I don’t think so because he is a professional cricketer, we all treat him as a cricketer, to be honest. I hope he will do something special in this series," he added.
Shakib has been a crucial all-rounder for Bangladesh across the formats. The left-handed batter has amassed 4,505 runs and taken 237 wickets in 67 Test matches. He is the highest wicket-taker among Bangladeshi bowlers in Test cricket.
