Shakib Al Hasan embroiled in fresh controversy as arrest warrant issued in fraud case

Legendary all-rounder and former captain of Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan, is facing legal trouble after a Dhaka court issued an arrest warrant against him on January 19. The warrant is related to a cheque fraud case involving IFIC Bank, adding to the controversies that have often surrounded his career.

Shakib is currently in Dubai due to political unrest in Bangladesh. He retired from T20Is after the 2024 T20 World Cup but expressed interest in playing in the Champions Trophy 2025. However, he was not included in the squad following his suspension from bowling in both domestic and international cricket.

Bangladesh Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Shakib Al Hasan in Cheque Fraud Case

According to reports, Shakib Al Hasan is facing legal trouble after a case was filed against him and three others by IFIC Bank on December 15, accusing them of failing to honor a commitment to transfer BDT 4.14 crore (around INR 3 crore) through two cheques.

A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against Shakib in connection with this case. The warrant was issued by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman and named Shakib, along with his company, Al Hasan Agro Farm Ltd.'s manager Shahgir Hussain, director Imdadul Haque, and Malaikar Begum.

Citing the case statement, Cricbuzz reported that it "also implicated Shakib's company, Al Hasan Agro Farm Ltd., its Managing Director Gazi Shahagir Hossein, and directors Emdadul Haque and Malaikar Begum. Shakib's company had borrowed funds from IFIC Bank's Banani branch at various times. The cheques in question were issued to repay part of the loans but were dishonoured due to insufficient funds."

Shakib Al Hasan, once a beloved cricketer in Bangladesh, has faced increasing scrutiny due to his political affiliations. He is unlikely to return to Bangladesh soon. Shakib entered into politics in 2023, joining the Awami League, and won the Magura-1 constituency in the uncontested January 2024 elections.

However, the 37-year-old's political involvement has led to charges, including a murder case amid political unrest. His association with the Awami League has made him a target under the current government's leadership.

Shakib Al Hasan last played for the national team in a Test match against India in Kanpur last year. He had an impressive Test career with 4609 runs, five centuries, and 246 wickets in 71 Test matches.

He made his international debut in 2006 in an ODI against Zimbabwe. Shakib has scored 7570 runs, nine centuries, and 317 wickets in 247 ODIs. In T20Is, he scored 2551 runs and took 149 wickets. Shakib is the only all-rounder to have been ranked in the top 3 of the ICC Player Rankings across all three formats.
