The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed veteran allrounder Shakib Al Hasan as their new ODI captain for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 and the ICC World Cup 2023. He has pipped Litton Das to become the new ODI captain of the Bangla Tigers. Allrounder Mehidy Hasan was also a strong contender for the post.

Both Shakib Al Hasan and Litton were the favorites to be named as the new ODI captain after Tamim Iqbal stepped down from the post earlier this month. With a back injury ruling the veteran opening batsman out of the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, he also decided to resign as the captain to make sure that the team prepares well for the World Cup.

Shakib Al Hasan appointed as Bangladesh ODI Captain:

A day before the deadline for announcing the Asia Cup squad, Bangladesh have finalized Shakib Al Hasan as their new captain. While they were expected to make the announcement on Monday (August 7) after the emergency meeting, BCB decided to delay the announcement to take the candidates’ views also into consideration.

Shakib Al Hasan was the favorite right from the start but there were some doubts that he might decide against accepting the responsibility since he is already the captain of the Test and the T20I teams.

“After our emergency meeting today, the board has entrusted the president to discuss the matter with the captaincy candidates by August 12. The president will hear about who will lead in which format, and whether that player agrees with it or not. We want to hear it from the candidates what they feel about captaining the red and white-ball teams,”,” Jalal Yunus, the BCB’s cricket operations chairman had said earlier this week.

And according to Cricbuzz, Shakib Al Hasan has now been finalized as the Bangladesh captain for the Asia Cup and the World Cup. One of Bangladesh’s most decorated cricketers, the ace all-rounder is not new to leading the team in the ODI format.

He has led the team in 50 ODIs so far. While leading the team, he has scored 1547 runs in addition to picking up 68 wickets in the 50-over format.
