Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 owing to a finger injury. The veteran allrounder sustained an injury to his left Index finger during the game against Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday (November 6).

He suffered the injury while batting. Later, an X-ray scan confirmed a fracture in the finger. Consequently, he has been ruled out of the tournament and won’t be a part of Bangladesh’s last league game. Bangladesh, who have already been knocked out of the competition, will take on five-time world champions at the MCA Stadium in Pune on 11 November.

“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers,” Bangladesh physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said.

“He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab,” he added.

While Bangladesh are already out of the semifinal race, they still have a lot to play for in the competition. They are in danger of missing out on a spot for the 2025 Champions Trophy and would be desperate to win their last league game to remain in contention.

The top eight teams from the ongoing World Cup will qualify for the tournament. Bangladesh are currently at the seventh spot with 2 wins and 6 defeats. They began their campaign with a win over Afghanistan before losing six games in a row. They finally ended their losing streak with a fine 3-wicket win over Sri Lanka.

Shakib Al Hasan’s starring role:

Shakib Al Hasan led Bangladesh from the very front against Sri Lanka. After picking up 2 wickets, he played a fine knock of 82 runs to help his side chase down 280 runs inside 42 overs. Bangladesh were reeling at 41 for 2 before Najmul Hossain Shanto (90) and Shakib shared a 169-run stand for the third wicket. The Bangla Tigers lost some quick wickets towards the end but eventually crossed the finishing line with ease.
