In a stunning development, Shan Masood has decided to resign as the captain of the Pakistan national cricket team after the humiliating whitewash by the Bangladesh national cricket team in the recent two-match Test series. Masood had a really poor record as the Test captain.
On Wednesday, May 20, the Bangladesh national cricket team completed a historic 2-0 series sweep over the Pakistan national cricket team. After dominating the first Test in Dhaka, Bangladesh won the second Test by 78 runs at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium to complete the series sweep.
Are Shan Masood’s captaincy days over?
In the first Test, they had suffered a massive 104-run defeat against Bangladesh in Dhaka, and the hosts produced an even stronger display to whitewash Pakistan 2-0 for the first time at home.
After facing the first-ever Test series whitewash in Bangladesh, Shan Masood has reportedly decided to submit the resignation as the Test captain to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Following the embarrassing Test series defeat, Shan Masood admitted that Pakistan made several mistakes during the series in Bangladesh. He said that allowing Bangladesh to score 390 runs in the second innings showed that the hosts simply played better cricket in Sylhet.
Masood also said Pakistan has dominated many teams in Test cricket before, but results do not always go in their favor. He admitted that the team could have made better decisions and executed their plans more smartly during the two-match test series.
The skipper also added that learning from mistakes is an important part of the game, and Pakistan now wants to work harder and improve their performances in the upcoming matches.

Shan Masood apologizes to Pakistan fans
Furthermore, Masood admitted that the decision about his future as Pakistan’s Test captain is no longer in his control. He also apologized to the fans after another disappointing series and said the team now needs to think calmly and make smart decisions instead of reacting emotionally.
The skipper said at the press conference, “I don’t want to criticize or praise anyone. Why are we not doing well in Test cricket…? I will sit down with the board and discuss this. As far as the captaincy is concerned, it is for the board to decide. I can understand the emotions of the people with the result, and I can only offer my sincere apologies for the loss, but we can’t look at things emotionally, and we have to find a way to do well in test matches.”
Shan Masood’s poor captaincy record
Meanwhile, Shan Masood was appointed Pakistan’s Test captain in November 2023, but his stint has been very disappointing. From 2023 to 2026, Pakistan played 16 Test matches under his captaincy and managed to win only four matches while losing 12 Tests.
The team suffered a 3-0 whitewash in Australia and then both home and away series losses against Bangladesh. The only positive was Pakistan’s 2-1 Test series win against England, but then they suffered another 2-0 series loss to South Africa.
