Former England cricketer Mike Gatting, who was the victim of Shane Warne’s famous ‘ball of the century’, paid tribute to the Australian cricketer who passed away on Friday. Mike Gattling said that Shane Warne will always be the number one leg spinner for him.

Mike Gatting and Shane Warne share one of the most popular moments in cricket. During the 1st Test match of The Ashes 1993 series at Old Trafford, Warne bowled a mistery spin ball that dismissed Gatting. The ball pitched outside the leg stumps but later turned too much to hit the off-stump. It became one of the most amazing spin delivery of all time and was dubbed as “ball of the century”.

Without A Doubt, Shane Warne is The Number One Ever: Mike Gatting

In conservation to Sky Sports News, Mike Gatting paid condolences to Warne, who died on Friday. Gatting said that it was a huge loss to many people. He also said that Warne will always be the number one spin bowler for him.

“Absolutely devastating and I just feel so sad for his family. It is a huge loss to many, many people. Without a doubt, he is the number one ever. I should think there have been a lot of great cricketers, great spinners, and great leg-spinners but Warnie will always be, certainly from my point of view, the number one”, Mike Gatting said.

Gatting also said that Warne owned a lot of self-confidence and ability and inspired many guys to take up leg-spin bowling.

“He had all the things a cricketer needed, a lot of self-confidence, a lot of ability, the discipline, passion and desire. Above all he had time to enjoy it. He had great fun playing cricket and resonated with a lot of youngsters. The inspirational leg-spin he bowled I am sure inspired many, many guys to take up leg-spin bowling”, Gatting further said.

Shane Warne was on a vacation in Thailand when the news of his sudden demise broke out. Warne was 52 years old. Warne is among the top spinners to play the game of cricket. He played for Australia from 1992 to 2007.

During his 15 years long career, Warne picked 1001 wickets and is the second-highest wicket-taker in international cricket. Warne played 145 Tests and 194 ODIs during his career. He scalped 708 wickets in Test and 293 in ODIs, average around 25+ in both formats.
