Team India cricketer Shardul Thakur has been penalized for a disciplinary breach during the ongoing T20 Mumbai League, according to a report by the Times of India. The experienced fast bowler faced action from match officials after showing dissent against an on-field umpiring decision during the match.

The incident took place at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, June 3, during the match between Eagle Thane Strikers and Aakash Tigers MWS. The contest ended in dramatic fashion, with Eagle Thane Strikers suffering a narrow one-run defeat after Amartya Raje was run out on the second-last ball of the final over.

According to a social media update from Times of India journalist Gaurav Gupta, Shardul Thakur was found guilty of breaching the T20 Mumbai League's code of conduct. The fast bowler was charged with a Level 2 offence for abusing an umpire during the match.

"@T20Mumbai breaking update: Veteran seamer #ShardulThakur has been fined Rs 20,000 and has received 3 demerit points for a Level 2 offence..he has been punished for abusing the umpire during @eaglestrikers match vs Aakash Tigers MWS at the Wankhede on Wednesday night," Gaurav Gupta wrote on X.

Following the review, league officials fined Shardul Thakur Rs 20,000 and handed him three demerit points. The punishment was imposed after the incident was examined by the tournament authorities.

Eagle Thane Strikers Fall Short in Thrilling One-Run Defeat

Eagle Thane Strikers, led by Shardul Thakur, were in a strong position during the chase but suffered a late collapse and lost by one run. Chasing 173, the Strikers were bowled out for 171 in 19.5 overs.

Earlier, Aakash Tigers MWS posted 172/9 in their 20 overs, with Joy Bista scoring 56 off 40 balls. Shardul opened the bowling and delivered an economical spell of 0/11 from two overs. In the chase, Sumeir Zaveri scored 26, Sairaj Patil made a quick 39, and Siddhant Singh added 37.

Coming in at No. 8, Shardul played a valuable cameo of 25 off 15 balls, including one four and two sixes. However, his dismissal in the 18th over by Jamshed Alam proved crucial. The match eventually ended with Amartya Raje being run out by Naman Pushpak on the second-last ball of the innings.

Ahead of IPL 2026, Shardul Thakur returned to his home franchise, Mumbai Indians, after the team acquired him from Lucknow Super Giants in a trade worth INR 2 crore. The move generated plenty of excitement, with expectations high for the experienced all-rounder ahead of the new season.

However, Mumbai Indians struggled throughout the campaign and finished ninth in the points table. The five-time champions failed to find consistency, resulting in one of their poorest seasons in recent years.

Shardul also endured a difficult tournament. He picked up 12 wickets in nine matches but conceded runs at an economy rate of 12.27. His performances were disappointing in IPL 2025, when he finished as Lucknow Super Giants' leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets.
