Stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan may have become the first Indian captain to lose to Sri Lanka in a bilateral T20I series but he has certainly won a lot of hearts courtesy of his heartfelt gesture in the immediate aftermath of the third T20I.
After Sri Lanka consigned India to their first bilateral series defeat since February 2019, Shikhar Dhawan was spotted sharing a word or two with the home side players.
The visuals soon went viral on social media and a plethora of fans of both India and Sri Lanka lauded the veteran southpaw for his gesture.
Dhawan was asked about the same in the post-match presentation and he revealed that the Sri Lankan players had asked him about his process.
And, he was telling them about the same.
”Both teams played in great spirit. It’s beautiful that we were competitive in the field and respect was there. The SL boys wanted to know what’s my process, I was just sharing my experience. I hope they enjoyed listening to it. And, congratulations to the Sri Lankan team,”’ said Shikhar Dhawan.
Shikhar Dhawan also went on to laud the Sri Lankan team for their brilliant performance in the last two matches besides stating that the series was played in real good spirit with both sides having mutual respect.
Meanwhile, this is India’s first series defeat to Sri Lanka across all three formats of the game.
Before this series win, the last time Sri Lanka managed a bilateral rubber triumph over India, current Indian skipper Virat Kohli was still a few days away from making his international debut.
That victory came in July 2008 where Sri Lanka beat India 2-1 in three-match Test series on home soil.
Since then, India and Sri Lanka played 21 bilateral rubbers before this series with the former emerging victorious in 20 of them. The 2010 Test series in Sri Lanka ended in a 1-1 draw.
This is also Sri Lanka’s first T20I series win since their 3-0 triumph over Pakistan in September 2019.
