Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has explained Shikhar Dhawan’s current scenario in the Indian team. Chopra feels that Indian team management is not thinking about the Indian opener at all for ICC World Cup 2023.
Shikhar Dhawan was a crucial part of India’s ODI setup till last year. However, after his poor show ODI series against Bangladesh, he was dropped from the ODI side and Shubman Gill replaced him as opener in ODIs. Dhawan got out for single digits in all three games against Bangladesh as India lost the away series 2-1.
Indian Team Management Is Not Thinking At All About Shikhar Dhawan: Aakash Chopra
While speaking on his Youtube channel, former India opener Aakash Chopra talked about Shikhar Dhawan’s scenario in the Indian team. The former Indian opener feels that Dhawan never performed poorly in ODIs. However, Shubman Gill replaced him as an opener in ODIs due to his ability to bat well in all three formats.
“When he played the last World Cup, he had a fracture and went out after that, but went after scoring a century in that match as well. There is no competition for him in ODI cricket but at this point in time it doesn’t look like the Indian selectors or team management are thinking about him at all,” Aakash Chopra said.
“It is like you are doing very well but suddenly someone comes and because he is a three-format player and is doing well in multiple places, he goes ahead of you. You say – ‘I never lost in the race but what happened actually? Some other player won some other race, so why are you dropping me?’, Aakash Chopra further added.

Moreover, the former KKR player Akash Chopra also feels that Shikhar Dhawan will not be part of the ICC World Cup 2023 as he was not picked in the recent IND vs WI Test series and is also not part of the forthcoming Asian Games 2023.
“Shikhi boy’s name should have been on this list but it seems like it won’t be there because his name is not there for the West Indies tour as well and you didn’t put his name for the Asian Games too. So it seems like the team has turned their back on him,” Chopra concluded.
Shikhar Dhawan has not played any ODI game since the start of this year. With skipper Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill has opened the innings for India in all ODI games this year.
