Virender Sehwag Would Often Do the Opposite of What I Wanted - Sachin Tendulkar
During the interactive session at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Sachin shared how sports treat everyone equally and help build understanding among teammates. He recalled his experience with Virender Sehwag, his long-time opening partner, and revealed how they often approached things differently.
“With Sehwag, he would often do the opposite of what I wanted. So, if I wanted him to defend for a few overs, I would tell him, 'Viru, go and start blasting the bowlers.' He would then say, 'No paaji, I think I should defend for four overs first and then attack.' I had to say the opposite to get the best out of him, and I would smile, knowing I had achieved what I wanted," said Tendulkar.
Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag's Contrasting Approaches to the Game
Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag had contrasting approaches to the game. Sehwag's strategy was simple – see the ball and hit it – while Tendulkar focused on building his innings. Tendulkar partnered with both Sourav Ganguly and Sehwag in ODIs and adapted his approach to suit each player's style.
Sehwag and Tendulkar formed a key partnership in the 2011 World Cup, where they dominated even the best bowling attacks from teams like South Africa, Pakistan, and England.
The pair scored 3919 runs in 93 ODI innings at an average of 42, with 12-century partnerships. Their average was slightly affected by Sehwag's aggressive style. However, their partnership was consistently productive, with the pair scoring at nearly a run a ball or more.
The pair's average was slightly lower away from home, as Sehwag thrived on the better batting pitches in India.
