The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) punished Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer for the second time in IPL 2026. The ace batter received a financial penalty because Punjab Kings maintained a slow over-rate against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on April 3.

Punjab secured a five-wicket victory against the Super Kings. PBKS chased down a 210-run target with eight balls to spare. Priyansh Arya, who scored 39 runs off 11 balls with three fours and four sixes, was named Player of the Match. Iyer scored 50 runs off 29 balls, including four fours and three sixes.

Shreyas Iyer Fined ₹24 Lakh for Second Slow Over-Rate Offense

The BCCI fined Shreyas Iyer ₹24 lakh after the match against Chennai Super Kings, doubling the ₹12 lakh penalty he received in the previous game for the same mistake.

The repeated offence also led to stricter action against the entire team. Every member of the playing XI, along with the Impact Player, was also fined either ₹6 lakh or 25 per cent of their match fees, whichever was lower.

"Punjab Kings Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No.7 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai," the IPL statement read.

"As this was his team’s second offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser," the statement added.

Why Shreyas Iyer Will Not Face Suspension Despite Repeated Offences

Shreyas Iyer will not be suspended even if Punjab Kings commit another breach in the upcoming matches. The league has removed the earlier rule that handed captains a one-match ban after three such offences. He remains available for upcoming matches even if Punjab Kings repeat the mistake.

The IPL now focuses on penalties during and after the game. In the match against Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings had to keep an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle as part of the in-game punishment. Financial fines also continue to apply for these offences.

A new system has also been introduced to track discipline over time. Iyer receives demerit points for the offence, and they stay on his record for 36 months. While there is no immediate ban, accumulating more points over time could still lead to suspension, making repeated mistakes a long-term risk.

I Think That Was an Exceptional Start for Us - Shreyas Iyer

After the match, Shreyas Iyer credited the aggressive start given by Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh. He added that their ability to provide fast starts helped control the required run rate and made the chase easier for the middle order.

"The way we started today, I think that was an exceptional start for us. Priyansh and Prab doing the job at the start and then setting the bench for us going inside. And I personally feel that the way they've been batting over the years now, it's phenomenal to see them giving us that start, and it stabilises the rhythm for us," Iyer said.
