Shreyas Iyer could soon make a stunning comeback to the India National Cricket Team across the formats after being left out of the England tour earlier this year. With the Asia Cup 2025 approaching and a Test series lined up against the West Indies later this year, Indian selectors are considering handing Shreyas Iyer a recall to the T20I and Test setup this month.
The experienced Mumbai batter is reportedly seen in a key role in the middle order for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 and two-match Test series against the West Indies. The Asia Cup 2025, which is scheduled to begin on September 9 in the UAE, will be played in the T20 format, and the BCCI is expected to announce their squad later this month.
Shreyas Iyer in line for T20I and Test comeback ahead of Asia Cup 2025 and West Indies series
Iyer, who is currently part of the ODI setup, is being considered for both T20Is and Tests as part of a broader plan to strengthen India’s batting core ahead of a packed season. It is being said that the right-handed batter’s return could solve India’s middle-order struggles, especially against spin.

His calm presence and proven track record at No. 4 have caught the selectors’ attention once again. Notably, the Indian cricket team will play two Test matches against the West Indies, starting October 2 in Ahmedabad, followed by a two-match Test series against South Africa.
A source was quoted as saying by the Times of India, “We need Iyer’s class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something that we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four tests—two each against the West Indies and South Africa.”
Shreyas Iyer’s Test comeback trail to begin in Duleep Trophy
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer has been named in the West Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025, which will be held at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence from August 28. As the defending champions, West Zone will begin their campaign directly in the semifinals on September 4.
Iyer hasn’t played Test cricket since February last year, when a back injury and dip in form saw him dropped during the Test series against England at home. The Mumbai batter also lost his central contract after showing reluctance to play domestic cricket.
However, since then, he has been making everything right to come back into contention. He also won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with India earlier this year in the UAE. Iyer was India’s highest run-scorer in their triumphant campaign.
