Shreyas Iyer’s name is back in the spotlight as the Indian selectors are all set to pick the India A squad for the upcoming multi-format series against Australia A at home. There are strong chances that Shreyas Iyer could be handed a major responsibility, possibly even the captaincy of the India A side.

The Australia A team is set to land in India next week for a full tour, beginning with two four-day red-ball games before shifting focus to three white-ball games.

Shreyas Iyer is likely to lead India A in the Australia A series

These matches will give selectors a close look at players who are in contention for the upcoming Test series against the West Indies. And Iyer is reportedly being considered for the test selection for the upcoming home series.

Presently, the Mumbaikar is playing for West Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2025 semifinal against Central Zone in Bengaluru. He could score only 25 runs in the first innings.

However, it is unlikely to hurt Iyer’s chances of being selected for the upcoming two four-day red-ball matches against Australia A. As reported by Cricbuzz, Shreyas Iyer is likely to get a “prominent role in the side, captaincy or otherwise” against the Australian A side.

Shreyas Iyer's red-ball return confirmed!

The report suggests that even if Iyer is not selected for the white-ball games, it is very likely that he will be selected for the red-ball games against Australia A.

The Indian middle-order batter is in serious discussion for the red-ball selection, which shows that the selectors still see him as part of India’s future in Test cricket.

This is a clear hint that Shreyas Iyer could be considered for the upcoming Test series against the West Indies in October as well as the away red-ball series in Australia later this year.

Apart from Iyer, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and Sai Sudharsan, N. Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Rajat Patidar are among others in consideration for the red-ball selection.

India A series begins a day after the Duleep Trophy 2025 Final

With the Duleep Trophy 2025 semifinals wrapping up on September 7, the Indian selectors are expected to announce the red-ball and white-ball squads for the Australia A series shortly after. Players involved in the ongoing tournament will have little recovery time before these matches.

The first of the two four-day games between India A and Australia A will get underway in Lucknow on September 16, just a day after the Duleep Trophy 2025 final, which will be played from September 11 to 15 in Bengaluru. The second red-ball game is scheduled in Lucknow from September 23 to 26.

After these red-ball games, the action shifts to the white-ball cricket in Kanpur, where three games are set for September 30, October 3, and October 5.

On the other hand, the two-match Test series between India and West Indies will begin on October 2 in Ahmedabad. The second and final game is scheduled for October 10 in Delhi.

In the same month, the Men in Blue will also travel to Australia for the white-ball series. The tour will begin with the ODIs on October 19, and it is being said that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will both retire from the game in Australia.
