Team India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer struggled with the bat during the first ODI of the three-match series against Australia. The right-handed batter departed for 11 runs off 24 balls, caught behind by wicketkeeper Josh Philippe while gloving a down-the-leg-side delivery at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday.
Rain interrupted play twice, with the second stoppage lasting a few hours. When the match resumed, India were struggling at 37 for 3 in 11.5 overs, with Shreyas Iyer (6) and Axar Patel (7) at the crease. Hazlewood struck again after the break, claiming his second wicket of the day to deepen India’s early troubles.
Shreyas Iyer Perishes for 11 Runs Off Josh Hazlewood
After the rain break, Shreyas Iyer smashed four runs off Josh Hazlewood’s delivery. He used the width offered to send the ball to the fence on the final delivery of the 12th over.
However, Hazlewood quickly regained control in his next over. He bowled a back-of-a-length delivery angled in, which Iyer could only defend. Iyer attempted a fine glance off the next delivery but was beaten by the extra bounce, only managing to touch the ball with his glove.
Josh Philippe dived to his left to take the catch. Iyer perished for 11 runs off 24 balls, and with his dismissal, India’s top four batters were back in the pavilion for just 45 runs, leaving the team under pressure early in the innings.
