Shreyas Iyer's maiden series as India’s full-time T20I captain has gone from bad to worse. India ended their England tour with a humiliating defeat after losing the fifth and final T20I by 56 runs at the Rose Bowl on July 11. As England won the five-match T20I series 4-0, Shreyas Iyer is still waiting for his first win as India's T20I captain.

It was a tour that India would not want to revisit ever again. The India National Cricket Team struggled badly in the five-match T20I series, created several unwanted records, and lost their No.1 T20I ranking after more than 1,600 days, with England becoming the new No.1 team in the format. Amid this, Shreyas Iyer reveals the reason behind picking Sanju Samson over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in 5th T20I vs England.

Shreyas Iyer's captaincy nightmare continues as England complete a 4-0 series win

England completely dominated the fifth and final match with the bat as India's bowlers looked helpless. They posted a huge 257/3 on the board after Jos Buttler played an outstanding innings of 131 runs from just 64 balls. He smashed 12 fours and eight sixes to register the highest T20I score of his career.

Harry Brook also played a brilliant knock of an unbeaten 95 from only 45 balls against India. Axar Patel gave away 63 runs in his four overs, and Prince Yadav conceded 60 runs, while debutant Suryansh Shedge also had a tough outing after replacing the injured Harshit Rana in the playing XI.

India needed 258 runs to win and started the chase with positive intent. Ishan Kishan scored 56 runs from 35 balls, while Tilak Varma made a quick 53 off only 25 balls. However, India kept losing wickets at regular intervals and finished on 201/8, falling 56 runs short to avoid the whitewash in England.

Shreyas Iyer joins the unwanted list after seven winless T20Is as captain

With India’s embarrassing hammering by England in the T20I series, Shreyas Iyer entered the record books for the wrong reasons.

Shreyas Iyer has now captained India in seven T20I matches without winning even one. He has become only the fourth captain from a full-member cricket nation to start his T20I captaincy with seven matches without a victory.

Before the Mumbaikar, only Zimbabwe's Brendan Taylor, Elton Chigumbura, and Sri Lanka's Thisara Perera had that disappointing outing. India lost an international match against Ireland for the first time and also lost a T20I series to Ireland for the first time. The team also went without a win in five, six, and seven straight T20I matches for the first time.

India also suffered their biggest-ever T20I defeat after losing by 125 runs in the third T20I against England. They were bowled out for just 76 runs in the same match, which became their second-lowest total in T20I cricket. After 12 years, India lost a T20I series to England, and after seven years, they also lost back-to-back T20I series, and that came under Iyer’s captaincy.

The list of disappointing records under Shreyas Iyer continued. India lost an international match at Bristol for the first time, conceded a 200-plus partnership in a T20I for the first time, and also gave away a total of more than 250 runs in a T20I for the very first time in the format.

India also lost four matches in a single T20I series for the first time and suffered back-to-back bilateral T20I series defeats without winning a single match. For Iyer, the England tour has become the toughest start to his captaincy career, with his search for his first victory still continuing.
