Team India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is set to be out of action for a minimum of three weeks after sustaining an injury during the third ODI against Australia. The middle-order batter suffered a blow to his ribs while taking a catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling in Sydney on Saturday, October 25.

Shreyas sprinted back from point to take a sharp diving catch, but was in visible pain after landing heavily on his side. He was seen clutching his ribs as the medical staff attended to him before he slowly walked off the field, with commentators expressing concern after replays suggested the injury might be serious.

Shreyas Iyer Likely to Be Out of Action for at Least Three Weeks

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on social media that Shreyas Iyer had been taken to the hospital for a medical examination. Notably, he required further evaluation to determine the severity of the injury.

"UPDATE - Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury," the statement read.

According to a report by PTI, Shreyas is likely to be out of action for at least three weeks due to his injury, and a hairline fracture could extend his recovery further.

“Shreyas was taken to the hospital for scans during the match itself. As per initial diagnosis, there has been a jerk and he will have to be out of action for minimum three weeks.

“He will have to report to the Centre of Excellence on his return. Further reports are awaited before one can conclude if he will require more time for recovery. If it is a hairline fracture then it might take longer,” a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Shreyas Iyer’s Participation in ODI Series Against South Africa at Risk

There have been doubts over Shreyas Iyer's participation in the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa. The three-match ODI series is set to begin on November 30, following the conclusion of the two-match Test series.

"It is too early to say. If it is three weeks before RTP (Return To Play), then there is a chance that it could be touch and go before November 30," the source added.

The 30-year-old currently plays for India in only one format. He recently requested a break from red-ball cricket because of back problems. Iyer has not been selected for T20Is for a considerable period.

Shreyas Iyer Did Not Bat as Team India Secured a Nine-Wicket Victory

Shreyas Iyer was not required to bat in the third ODI, as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli completed the run chase. The veterans helped the team finish the target with more than 11 overs to spare.

Rohit Sharma continued his excellent form from the second ODI in Adelaide. The former skipper scored an unbeaten 121, while Virat Kohli, who had struggled with two ducks in the first two matches, bounced back with an unbeaten 74.

The duo added an unbroken partnership of 168 runs. Team India completed the 237-run target in just 38.3 overs and avoided a series whitewash. The two sides are now set to face each other in a five-match T20I series, starting on October 29.
