Team India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer issued an official statement after suffering a ruptured spleen and rib cage injury during the third and final ODI against Australia in Sydney last week. The ODI vice-captain stated that he is currently recovering from the setback and getting better with each passing day.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed reports claiming that Shreyas had undergone surgery for his injury. He clarified that the batter underwent a medical procedure to control internal bleeding from a lacerated spleen rather than surgery. Saikia added that Iyer’s recovery has been quicker than expected.

Shreyas Iyer Taken to Hospital After Suffering Massive Injury in 3rd ODI vs Australia
During the third ODI against Australia at the SCG, Iyer injured himself while taking a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey in the 34th over. After completing the catch, he landed awkwardly and appeared to be in severe pain. He walked off the field but did not return for the remainder of the innings.
Iyer’s condition worsened after being taken to a Sydney hospital, where scans revealed internal bleeding from a lacerated spleen, leading to his admission to the ICU.
This isn’t the first time Iyer has suffered a serious fielding injury. He dislocated his shoulder during a 2020 series against England and is also managing a recurring back problem, which has forced him to take a break from red-ball cricket.
Shreyas Iyer Likely to Be Out of Action For Two Months
Shreyas Iyer is expected to be out of action for around two months. He is likely to miss the three-match ODI series against South Africa scheduled for November-December and may not regain full match fitness in time for the home ODI series against New Zealand in January.
His absence could also impact his chances of being included in India’s T20 World Cup plans. The selectors are expected to finalize the squad during the New Zealand series. If Iyer misses both upcoming series, he is likely to return to action during the white-ball tour of England in July next year.
“Shreyas is much, much better, recovering quicker than the doctors had anticipated. I’ve been in contact with Dr. Rizwan Khan, the Indian team doctor who remained with Shreyas to oversee his treatment in Sydney. Normally, recovery would take around six to eight weeks, but Shreyas might surprise us with an earlier comeback,” said BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
