Shreyas Iyer produced one of the finest T20I innings of his career on Tuesday, smashing his maiden international century to guide India to an eight-wicket win over West Indies in the first T20I in Lucknow. The India captain remained unbeaten on 102 off just 43 balls, striking at 237.21 with 10 fours and six sixes.

Iyer reached his century in 42 balls, taking the attack apart after India were reduced to 35/2 early in the chase. His unbeaten partnership with Ishan Kishan helped India chase down 172 with 32 balls to spare, giving them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

The century completed a rare achievement for Iyer as he became one of the Indian players to have scored an international hundred in all three formats. He joins an exclusive group featuring Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal among the men, while Smriti Mandhana is the other Indian name on the broader list.

Iyer's hundred was also his first in 66 T20I innings. He had previously registered a highest score of 74 in the format, making Tuesday's innings a significant landmark in his international career.

Rather than allowing West Indies to dictate terms after Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson's wicket, he took control alongside Ishan Kishan and turned the chase into a one-sided contest.

Major records created by Shreyas Iyer with brilliant century vs West Indies

Iyer's century also made him only the third Indian captain to score a T20I hundred, following Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. More significantly, Iyer became the first Indian captain to score a T20I century while chasing.

Shreyas Iyer's 42-ball century placed him alongside some of the fastest-scoring captains from Full Member nations. Only Sikandar Raza's 33-ball hundred and Rohit Sharma's 35-ball effort are ahead of him. Harry Brook also reached three figures in 42 balls earlier in 2026, meaning Iyer is joint-third on the list with the England captain. Faf du Plessis' 46-ball century follows them.

Fastest T20I centuries by captains from Full Member teams:

33 balls - Sikandar Raza

35 balls - Rohit Sharma

42 balls - Harry Brook

42 balls - Shreyas Iyer

46 balls - Faf du Plessis

Iyer's hundred also moved India to seven players with centuries across all three international formats. Australia have five such players, while Sri Lanka, England and several other Full Member teams have fewer. He is also now among India's T20I captains with multiple Player of the Match awards, joining Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli on that list.

Shreyas Iyer's India crush West Indies in 1st T20I

West Indies posted 171/10 after being sent in, with Shai Hope scoring 52 off 37 balls and Sherfane Rutherford adding 56 from 34. Naman Dhir made an impressive T20I debut with 3/31, while Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets apiece.

India's chase initially appeared vulnerable after Samson and Abhishek fell early. Iyer then changed the complexion of the innings, combining with Ishan Kishan for an unbeaten 137-run third-wicket partnership. Kishan finished with 37 off 27 balls.

Iyer brought up his hundred with a six off Roston Chase and finished on 102*. India reached 172/2 in only 14.4 overs to win by eight wickets and extend their T20I winning streak to 10 matches.
