Former Australia National Cricket Team all-rounder and the IPL-winning coach, Tom Moody, tore into the Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer for his reckless shot that led to his dismissal in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2025.
Tom Moody said that the Punjab Kings skipper should have kept his ego in his pocket when he was up against the premier right-arm quick Josh Hazlewood in the high-profile match.
Josh Hazlewood dismissed his bunny Shreyas Iyer in Qualifier 1
Shreyas Iyer has been leading the Punjab Kings extremely well in the Indian Premier League 2025, and he has earned the respect of his peers in the dressing room.
He has dominated with the bat and has played some terrific match-winning knocks for the Punjab Kings. Iyer also seems to have conquered his short-ball weakness, but the Aussie Josh Hazlewood continues to haunt him.
In Qualifier 1 of IPL 2025, Josh Hazlewood cleaned up Shreyas Iyer for a 3-ball 2-run at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, Chandigarh.
On the fourth ball of the 4th over, Josh Hazlewood bowled a length ball in that channel of outside off-stump to Iyer, who went for an ugly slog. He only managed to get a thin edge, and Jitesh Sharma easily completed the catch behind the stumps.
It was the fourth time that Hazlewood dismissed Iyer in T20 cricket in six innings. Overall, in 22 balls, Iyer has managed to score just 11 runs at an average of 2.75 and a strike rate of 50 against Hazlewood in 20-over cricket.
To me, he totally misread the game situation and his own situation - Tom Moody
During an interaction on ESPNcricinfo after the match, Tom Moody lashed out at Iyer for his mindset while facing Hazlewood. He said that the Punjab Kings skipper completely misread the situation. He stated:
"The first ball he played and missed - the perfect line that you'd expect Hazlewood to bowl. He sort of played at it, but didn't really want to play at it. And then, that third ball he got out.
"To me, he totally misread the game situation and his own situation. Yes, he would be aware that Hazlewood has had him a few times in the past. He would know the exact numbers."
At times, you need to put your ego in your pocket and just move forward - Tom Moody
Tom Moody further advised Shreyas Iyer to keep his ego in his pocket when facing Hazlewood, and added that he should have seen out the pacer's spell and tried to take on other bowlers. He elaborated:
"At times, you need to put your ego in your pocket and just move forward. To me that was the perfect example of not reading the situation - trying to overcome something that has been a darkness in the past instead of just swallowing your pride and just moving on by just accumulating.
"You only had to see Hazlewood out. It was a simple thing - see him out and look to dissect the rest of their attack."
Overall, Shreyas Iyer has struggled to bat in Mullanpur as he has registered the scores of 10 (5), 9 (7), 0 (2), 6 (10), and 2 (3). Also, he hates batting against RCB, as in three matches in IPL 2025, he has returned with scores of 7(10), 6 (10), and 2(3).
