However, Shreyas Iyer’s Mumbai teammate Shardul Thakur had decided not to engage in controversy. The seasoned Indian all-rounder avoided making any eyebrow-raising remark but made it clear that the right-handed batter has the resilience to fight his way back into the side.
Shardul Thakur was quoted as saying by ANI, “I cannot say that because it is the decision of the selectors and the board. So, we cannot say anything about that. But I cannot say anything about that because it is not in my hands. There will be controversies, but as a player, you have to be strong. And Shreyas is also very strong. Whenever he plays in the upcoming matches, I am sure he will give a very good performance.”

Adding to the drama, the build-up to the blockbuster India vs Pakistan clash in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 on September 14 has intensified, especially with boycott calls from the former cricketers and politicians in the wake of the Pahalgam attack earlier this year.
The 33-year-old highlighted the importance of the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, especially the high-voltage India vs Pakistan clash in Dubai. Thakur believes that the strong performances in the upcoming tournament will boost the team’s confidence and get the backing for the T20 World Cup 2026. He is also excited for the big match of the tournament.
Shardul signed off by saying, “India-Pakistan is always a big match for cricketers and for the country. And the Asia Cup is such a big tournament that it has a lot of importance in the life of a cricketer. We see that before the T20 World Cup, this tournament is played. And the performance in this is carried by the confidence of the team. So, Team India will always try to do well in this. And all the players will have our full support.”

Shardul Thakur set to lead West Zone in Duleep Trophy 2025
Notably, Shardul Thakur will be captaining West Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025 after Shreyas Iyer refused the role, anticipating India selection for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. Now, Iyer will play under Thakur in the premier tournament.
Thakur and Iyer will be seen in action in the Duleep Trophy 2025 semifinal clash, starting on September 4 in Bengaluru. The West Zone features Indian stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, and prominent names in domestic cricket like Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, and Tushar Deshpande.
