The Senior Men’s Selection Committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has revealed the India A squad for the upcoming three-match one-day series against Australia A. India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as captain for the series, which is set to begin on Tuesday, September 30, in Kanpur.
Shreyas Iyer has decided to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket due to recurring back issues. However, the right-handed batter is available for selection in the white-ball formats. Iyer last played for the national cricket team during the Champions Trophy 2025 final, where India defeated New Zealand.
Selectors Name India A Squad Against Australia A; Shreyas Iyer to Lead
Shreyas Iyer withdrew from the India A squad ahead of the second unofficial Test against Australia A. In his absence, wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel is captaining India A in the second multi-day match.
Iyer has been appointed captain of the India A squad for the upcoming One-Day series. He replaced Patidar and Tilak Varma as captain. Earlier, Patidar was appointed captain for the first game, while Varma was slated to lead the second and third matches.
Prabhsimran Singh, Riyan Parag, Ayush Badoni, Suryansh Shedge, Vipraj Nigam, Nishant Sindhu, and Gurjapneet Singh have been included in the squad for the first match. Abhishek Sharma, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh will join the squad for the remaining matches.
Iyer Has Has Opted Out Red-Ball Cricket Due to Back Problems
Shreyas Iyer has opted out of red-ball cricket due to recurring back problems following surgery in the UK in 2023. He had managed these issues with short breaks during the previous Ranji Trophy season.
Iyer had been expected to return for the West Indies Test series after Karun Nair, who played in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, failed to perform. With Iyer unavailable, selectors now face the task of picking India’s middle order.
Meanwhile, Rajat Patidar has been appointed captain of the Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup clash against Vidarbha.
