Team India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has provided an update on his injury ahead of the three-match ODI series against South Africa at home, starting on November 30. The right-handed batter has begun rehabilitation and shared an image of himself returning to the gym on his Instagram handle on Tuesday.
Iyer is recovering from a serious spleen injury he suffered during the recent ODI series in Australia. He was ruled out of the upcoming home ODIs against South Africa, where he was expected to lead the side in Shubman Gill’s absence. Following the Test series, the Men in Blue will play the ODI series against South Africa.
Shreyas Iyer Suffered an Injury During the ODI Series Against Australia
Shreyas Iyer landed awkwardly and took a blow to his abdomen while attempting a difficult catch in the deep during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. The impact caused a spleen laceration and internal bleeding.
The BCCI medical team rushed him to the hospital. Doctors confirmed internal haemorrhaging, and Iyer underwent a procedure to stop the bleeding. He remained under observation for a week before being discharged. The batter stayed in Australia for a short period to continue his recovery.
The Mumbai batter eventually returned home on November 16. During his rehabilitation, Iyer made a public appearance at Punjab Kings (PBKS) all-rounder Shashank Singh’s birthday celebration. He was seen smiling in photos shared by PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta.

Before his injury, Iyer featured in the ODI series against Australia, where India lost 1–2. He scored 11 runs in the first match but bounced back with 61 in the second game. He didn’t get a chance to bat in the final ODI, which India won comfortably.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli led the chase brilliantly in that third match, scoring unbeaten knocks of 121 and 74, respectively, to guide India to a nine-wicket victory.
Shreyas Iyer Ruled Out of India’s ODI Series Against South Africa
Shreyas Iyer is expected to remain unavailable for the next few months as he continues to recover from his injury. He will not be part of India’s upcoming three-match home ODI series against South Africa.
India will also be without their regular ODI captain, Shubman Gill, who has been ruled out due to a neck injury. With both senior leaders missing, the selectors have handed the captaincy responsibilities to KL Rahul, who will lead the side for the entire ODI series.
The ODI leg of the tour will begin on November 30 at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. The second match will be played in Raipur on December 3, and the third ODI will be hosted in Visakhapatnam on December 6.
Following the ODI series, both teams will shift their focus to the T20 format. A five-match T20I series will begin on December 9 in Cuttack.
