Following India's victory over Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Shreyas Iyer shared an update about injury scares to skipper Rohit Sharma and pacer Mohammed Shami. The middle-order batter also opened up about the Indian national cricket team not traveling to Pakistan for the tournament.
Rohit and Shami experienced hamstring issues while fielding after India were asked to bowl in Dubai on Sunday, February 23. Both had to leave the field for some time but returned later. Shami bowled eight overs, while Rohit scored 20 runs during the 242-run chase, which was completed in 42.3 overs.
There Is No Injury Concern to Them - Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer dismissed any injury concerns for Team India following their win over Pakistan. Speaking after the match, he confirmed that both Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami are fine and that there are no fitness issues ahead of India's next game against New Zealand on March 2.
“As far as I know, both Rohit and Shami are fine. There is no injury concern to them,” Iyer said.
Mohammed Shami had an ankle issue during his first spell and had to leave the field for some time. Rohit Sharma experienced hamstring discomfort after celebrating Babar Azam’s dismissal.
Any Victory Against Pakistan Is Sweet - Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer shared his thoughts on India not traveling to Pakistan for the tournament. Iyer added that any win against Pakistan is always special due to their competitive nature. He also acknowledged the external pressure surrounding such high-stakes matches but said he enjoyed the experience.
“I haven’t played that many matches in Pakistan, so I don’t know exactly how it would have felt. But it’s a neutral venue and it’s a challenge for both the teams. But any victory against Pakistan is sweet because they are always competitive,” he said.
“It’s a challenge and there’s a lot of pressure externally as well. It was a lot of fun. It was my third game in Pakistan,” he added.
Never Thought of Virat Struggling for Runs - Shreyas Iyer
The 30-year-old batter, who added a crucial 114-run partnership with Virat Kohli for the third wicket, praised the former Indian skipper. Iyer stated that Kohli never struggles for runs and highlighted his mindset and hunger for scoring.
“I have never thought of Virat struggling for runs. It is just the mindset that he possesses over the years. He is always hungry for runs. I remember yesterday, he had come almost an hour before us for the practice session and he played a few balls and he was looking from outside. He looked as crisp as he looks all the time. So, I never feel that he is struggling for his runs.”
Shreyas delivered a crucial knock in India's six-wicket win over Pakistan in Dubai. Chasing 242, he came to the crease after Shubman Gill’s dismissal at 100/2 in the 18th over. The right-handed batter scored 56 runs off 67 balls, including five fours and a six, before falling to Khusdil Shah at 214/3 in the 39th over.
