Punjab Kings (PBKS) fast bowler Vijaykumar Vyshak has backed skipper Shreyas Iyer to become the future captain of the Indian national cricket team. Vyshak praised the skipper’s leadership qualities and supportive nature, stating that he constantly supports his bowlers regardless of their form.
Punjab Kings have secured consecutive victories against Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2026. The Punjab team has seen a strong turnaround since appointing Iyer as captain. They will aim to extend their winning streak against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on Monday, April 6.
Shreyas Iyer Backs Players Irrespective Of Form - Vijaykumar Vyshak
During a media interaction on Sunday, Vijaykumar Vyshak said that Shreyas Iyer constantly supports his bowlers regardless of their current form. The fast bowler added that the Punjab Kings captain keeps things simple and reminds players that a single match means nothing.
"I think he's someone who has always backed his bowlers and players. It doesn't matter if you've been doing well or not, that is something very important for a bowler," Vyshak answered India Today’s query during a roundtable press meeting.
"He's done exceptionally well in this format and has been playing for India. I'm sure he'll be the Indian captain soon."
Shreyas Iyer Will Be The Indian Captain Soon - Vijaykumar Vyshak
Vijaykumar Vyshak revealed that Shreyas Iyer maintains a relaxed and equal environment within the dressing room. He stated that the captain communicates with everyone, including head coach Ricky Ponting and junior squad members.
"He is someone who keeps the environment very light. He speaks to all the players in the same way, whether it is Ricky Ponting, me, or anybody else," Vyshak stated.
"That is something that has made us more comfortable. I can go and talk to him whenever. I mean, his door is always open. He doesn't lock his door," he explained.
Shreyas Iyer Holds Strong Captaincy Record In Indian Premier League
Shreyas Iyer has built a strong captaincy record in the IPL. The middle-order batter led Delhi Capitals (DC) to their first-ever final in the 2020 season. He later guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the title in 2024. However, he was released by the Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2025.
Iyer has also formed a good partnership with Ricky Ponting at Punjab Kings, who finished as runners-up last year. He is currently Shubman Gill’s deputy in India’s ODI team. He missed a chance to captain India against South Africa at home due to an injury.
The batter is currently out of red-ball cricket due to back issues. He faces strong competition for a place in the T20I side despite his ability against spin. Iyer was the highest run-scorer for Punjab Kings last season, scoring 604 runs in 17 innings at an average of 50.33 and strike rate of 175.07, including six fifties.
