Indian middle-order batter and Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has opened up about an emotional rollercoaster ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Shreyas Iyer revealed that he was overwhelmed with frustration and even broke down in tears on his very first day of practice in Dubai.

After doing well in the home ODI series against England, the right-handed batter expected to settle in quickly, but the Dubai conditions were tricky, and he struggled more than he expected, leaving him visibly upset in the nets just before the start of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Iyer opened up about this tough moment during a chat on the show Kandid with Kings, where he recalled how difficult that first day felt. However, the Mumbai batter bounced back in style and shone bright with the bat and played a key role in India’s Champions Trophy victorious campaign.

He finished the tournament as India’s top scorer with 243 runs from five innings at an impressive average of 48.60. The Punjab Kings (PBSK) captain was also the second-highest run-scorer, just behind New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Shreyas Iyer said on the Kandid with Kings show, “The last time I cried was during the Champions Trophy, the first practice session. Like literally crying, crying. Because I batted in the nets, and it didn't go well. I was so angry with myself that I started crying. And I was also shocked at the fact that I don't cry that easily.”

Shreyas Iyer denied extra practice in Dubai?

The Indian middle-order batter had just come off a strong series against England, scoring 181 runs in three ODI matches, which silenced the talk around his No. 4 spot. But when he reached Dubai for Champions Trophy prep, things didn’t go as expected.

Since the pitch conditions were tough and he couldn’t find his rhythm during the first practice session, the PBKS skipper wanted extra time in the nets, but he didn’t get it, which frustrated and disappointed him more. But eventually, I managed to get back into the rhythm.

Iyer added, “I thought I would carry the same flow with me, but the wickets were different, and to adapt on the first day itself was an arduous task. When the practice ended, I wanted to practice a little extra, and I did not get the chance to do it, so I got angry.”

Shreyas Iyer continues to roar in the IPL 2025

Well, Iyer has made a roaring start in the ongoing IPL 2025, both as a batter and captain for Punjab Kings. After being bought for a whopping INR 26.75 crore in the mega auction, Iyer was handed the captaincy of PBKS, who are still in search of their maiden IPL title.

He has so far smashed 159 runs in just three innings at a blistering strike rate of 206.49, including two half-centuries in three games in the ongoing IPL 2025. Additionally, Iyer’s captaincy has brought a new energy to the side, as PBKS secured two wins from their three matches in the league so far.
