Shreyas Iyer's father has lashed out at the Indian selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir after the batter was overlooked for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 despite not doing anything wrong. Shreyas Iyer has been a consistent performer both at the domestic and international circuits.
Yet, the Indian selectors and Gautam Gambhir didn’t find the Mumbai batter suitable for the fast-paced T20 format. Iyer took the Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the IPL finals while captaining the teams from the front. And in 2024, the right-handed batter won the trophy with KKR as captain.
Shreyas Iyer’s father slams Indian selectors and Gautam Gambhir after Asia Cup 2025 snub
Not just that, Iyer played a key role in India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, followed by a stunning IPL 2025 season, where he piled up more than 600 runs for PBKS but only to find himself on the sidelines. After his Asia Cup 2025 snub, the senior Iyer expressed his outburst at the BCCI.
He revealed that Iyer accepts setbacks without showing anger, but the repeated snubs must hurt him deeply. His father emphasized that Iyer has done everything possible to earn a place in the Indian T20 setup, but he is not getting the opportunities under Gautam Gambhir.
He doesn't blame anybody, reveals Shreyas Iyer's father
Shreyas Iyer's father was quoted as saying by the Times of India, “I don’t know what else Shreyas has to do to make it to the Indian T20 team. He has been performing so well in the IPL year after year, from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders to Punjab Kings, and that too as a captain. He even captained KKR to the IPL title in 2024 and led PBKS to the final this year.”
The disappointed father further added, “I’m not saying make him the Indian captain, but at least select him in the team—even if he's left out of the team, he doesn't show dissent on his face. He'll just say, 'Mera Naseeb Hai' (It's my luck. You can't do anything now.'—He's always cool & calm. He doesn't blame anybody, but deep inside, he must be naturally disappointed.”

Shubman Gill returns to T20I side; Shreyas Iyer set to become India's next ODI captain
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has made his return to India’s T20I team and has been handed the vice-captaincy for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which will be played in the UAE from September 9 to 28. Gill’s rise has been nothing short of spectacular. He is seen as the next T20I captain.
While Gill made a comeback and was even promoted, Iyer is struggling to make the cut despite delivering strong performances regularly. However, the BCCI is looking at Iyer as the successor of Rohit Sharma as they await his retirement from the ODI cricket before the Australia tour.
It is being said that the selectors are eyeing Iyer as the next ODI captain. With Rohit Sharma asked to make a call within a couple of months on his ODI career, the Mumbai batter is being seen as a strong candidate to take over the 50-over captaincy and guide India into a new era.
